The strains, KP.2 and KP.1.1, are offshoots of the Omicron subvariant JN.1, which until last month was the most common form of the virus in the U.S. What’s with the nickname? The nickname comes from the technical names of the two variants’ mutations, one of which includes the letters “F” and “L,” while the other includes “R” and “T.” How common are they? According to the latest data from the CDC, KP.2 became the dominant strain in mid-April, accounting for about 25% of cases, while KP.1.1 is responsible for 7.5% of cases.
