Here’s a look at the new recommendation — and [why some advocates aren’t happy.]( The expert panel recommends that women begin getting mammograms every other year once they reach 40, instead of 50 as previously advised. A growing number of women in their 40s are being diagnosed with the disease. According to the National Cancer Institute, rates among this demographic have risen by 2% every year between 2015 and 2019. The guidance has been criticized by prominent women’s health advocates because it doesn’t endorse additional screening methods for women with dense breasts. It’s harder to find cancers in this type of breast tissue, and some studies show that extra imaging can be a valuable, and sometimes life-saving measure.
