(Getty Images ) On the Scene It’s been one week since NYPD officers arrested more than 100 pro-Palestine student protesters from Columbia University and Barnard College after hundreds set up camp on Columbia’s South Lawn. Since then, tensions have escalated. The campus has been locked down, and in-person classes are optional through the end of the semester. Meanwhile, similar camps have popped up at NYU, Emerson, and other schools across the country. Columbia administrators are meeting with student organizers to negotiate guidelines for continuing the protests. There have been growing calls for University President Nemat Shafik to resign over her handling of the camps and reports of antisemitism on campus. Politicians including NYC Mayor Eric Adams, Gov. Kathy Hochul, and House Speaker Mike Johnson have visited the school. But what's all this been like for the students?
