(Getty Images) On the Docket The Supreme Court heard oral arguments on Tuesday for a legal battle over [a federal law that’s been used to charge hundreds of Jan. 6 rioters](. The measure in question makes it a crime to “corruptly” obstruct or impede an official proceeding. Violations carry a maximum penalty of 20 years in prison. It stems from a law passed in 2002 in the aftermath of the Enron financial scandal. While a ruling isn’t expected until the summer, conservative justices appeared skeptical over concerns that it was being applied too broadly and could be weaponized against political protests. This comes just a day after the high court declined to hear an appeal from a Black Lives Matter organizer, effectively leaving in place a ruling that allows demonstration organizers to be held liable for violence caused by anyone who shows up to a mass demonstration — even counterprotestors.
