(Getty Images) Humanitarian Tragedy Israeli President Isaac Herzog has apologized for the strikes that killed seven members of a World Central Kitchen humanitarian aid team in Gaza on Monday. Prime Minister Netanyahu said the strikes were âunintendedâ and IDF officials are investigating. Devastating loss: The slain aid workers included three British citizens, a Polish citizen, an Australian citizen, an American-Canadian dual citizen, and a Palestinian citizen. Since their deaths, WCK has paused all humanitarian work in the region indefinitely. âHeartbrokenâ: José Andrés, the celebrity chef who founded the nonprofit, said on X that the Israeli government âneeds to stop restricting humanitarian aid, stop killing civilians and aid workers, and stop using food as a weapon.â Fallout: Around 2.2 million Palestinians face severe food shortages and imminent mass starvation. The Associated Press reports that WCK was due to play a central role in a new maritime aid route for Gaza. Now, the viability of that route is unclear. Meanwhile, Israeli protesters calling for Netanyahu's resignation and the return of hostages clashed with police outside his residence on Tuesday. The bigger picture: According to the U.N., at least 196 humanitarian aid workers have been killed in the West Bank and Gaza since October. National Security Council spokesman John Kirby said the White House is âoutragedâ by the deadly incident, but rejected the idea of placing conditions on aid to Israel.
