Who is RFK Jr.'s VP pick? [For the best experience, read in browser.]( March 27, 2024 Good morning. We’ve got the latest on the bridge collapse in Baltimore. We also share what you need to know about RFK Jr.’s running mate, and I asked Steve Schmidt [whether Kennedy’s campaign will hurt Biden or Trump more](. Then, we’re [fact-checking common myths]( about this famous family. Later on, we’re covering [celebrities who are apologizing for joking about Kate Middleton](. All that, plus [Ryan Cooper’s centering 10-minute meditation](, right here in Wake-Up Call.   In the News [Robert F Kennedy and his running mate Nicole Shanahan]( Getty Images A Big Announcement Robert F. Kennedy Jr. has chosen Nicole Shanahan, a Silicon Valley attorney, as his 2024 running mate. The independent presidential candidate described Shanahan as “a fellow lawyer, a brilliant scientist… [and] a fierce warrior mom.” So who is Shanahan? The 38-year-old founder of the Bia-Echo Foundation and ex-wife of Google cofounder Sergey Brin is a political newcomer, but she has a history of donating to Democratic campaigns, including President Biden’s. She was one of the earliest donors to Kennedy’s campaign, and even provided the cash for his now-infamous Super Bowl ad. Shanahan has espoused the same vaccine-critical rhetoric as her running mate. In an interview with Newsweek, she argued that Kennedy shouldn’t be labeled an anti-vaxxer: “What he’s highlighting is vaccine safety,” she insisted. As the 2024 presidential election ramps up, so do concerns that Kennedy might siphon enough votes away from a mainstream political party to sway the election. I’ve been thinking a lot about this, and spoke to political strategist Steve Schmidt about [whose campaign is threatened more by this third-party candidate.](   More Stories [A container ship smashing through Francis Scott Key Bridge]( Getty Images Baltimore bridge: Six construction workers are missing, presumed dead after the Francis Scott Key Bridge collapsed after being hit by a 984-foot container ship yesterday morning. The vessel lost power outside the port, meaning it was drifting rudderless. The crew sent out a "mayday" call which allowed authorities to stop traffic before the collision, likely saving many lives. SCOTUS: Justices seemed skeptical of a proposed nationwide ban on the abortion drug mifepristone during oral arguments yesterday. They spent little time probing whether the FDA's decision to ease access to the drug was unlawful, and instead focused on whether anti-abortion doctors even had the legal standing to bring their claim in the first place. U.S. news: A New York judge has imposed a gag order on Donald Trump in his hush money trial, citing his record of making "threatening" statements. NBC News is ousting former RNC chair Ronna McDaniel as a paid political analyst after its anchors launched an unprecedented on-air rebellion. And a spokesperson for Sacha Baron Cohen told CNN that Rebel Wilson's as-yet-unspecified claims about the actor are "demonstrably false." World news: A Russian court has extended Wall Street Journal reporter Evan Gershkovich's pretrial detention until at least late June. Gershkovich has been held on espionage charges, which the U.S. denounces, for over a year. Meanwhile, Gazan authorities say 12 people have drowned trying to retrieve aid dropped into the sea.   Must-Reads [black-and-white photo of the Kennedy family]( Fact-Check The Kennedys have been in the headlines for decades — but everything you think you know about this famous family may not be true.
