I'm moving house and studio and a bunch of new projects about to fruit! Really exciting but also a ton of work and stress :) love it. September 2020 Newsletter Howdy guitar friend Hope this newsletter finds you safe and well and having lots of time to play guitar. Firstly BIG THANK YOU to the 13,000+ people who filled out the survey - incredible feedback and it's been super helpful! Dr. MacKenzie won the $100 prize draw but ask it to be donated to Pilgrims Hospice! Things are pretty crazy here in Justin land, I'm moving out of my house so renovations can be done, probably going to take six months and my studio will be amazing when it's done, but meanwhile, the family are moving to a small flat! I've moved my studio into an office space where I can't make a lot of noise and the background was so drab that I've invested in a green screen - which could end up being a whole heap of fun, or not. Will see how that goes... Was a mad rush to get Grade 2 to all finished in time, and a whole new exciting chapter is going to start. I plan to get back to many more song lessons (both for beginners and harder things!) and the Grade 3 series are well into planning and hope to get started on them soon. But I'm going to need a week to chill out after the move - been a pretty full-on year and I've hardly stopped. That said... there is a ton of exciting things going on so I won't be gone long... Highlights - Beginner [Lesson 13 and 14]( are out - Grade 2 complete! - Beginner course lessons are being overdubbed into Spanish for a new YouTube channel :) - Website redevelopment is looking awesome! - New TV App in development too :) - Mega update of the Beginner App is entering beta testing stages! Grade 2 is done. Long live Grade 2! :) Lesson 14 turned into a bit of a monster, lot of pretty long lessons and some pretty thinky lessons. Playing without looking turned into a much bigger deal when I got really into exploring the how and why and we also look at slash chords, percussive hits in rhythm, playing standing up and some exploration of how not to lose interest along your journey! I've started work on all three of the Grade 3 modules and have rough sketches of what they'll each contain - but the planning part is the most consuming, I get really into how things build together and rather not rush it... will make some adaptions to the current Grade 3 modules too to bring them into line. Not sure if I'll be able to bring Nitsuj along for the ride - it's been fun but it takes a ton of time and I wanna get back to working on my real playing too! Big thanks to everyone leaving me feedback on the course - I'm making notes for tweaks and suggestions for improvements and will keep it evolving to be as good as it can be! Hope ur all diggin it! [Check it all out here :)]( Beginner Song Course App Have you checked out the reviews for this app? I hadn't seen them in a while and there are thousands of 5* reviews on Android and iOS and so much love for it - super proud of this product and the dev team who make it all happen. I just loaded the beta on my phone and it's looking and sounding awesome. We did a shout out for beta testers on the website - big thanks to the thousand or so who signed up for it! Super excited to ring this out to you - been a long time in the making and the whole team been working really hard on it! Remember it's a free update for registered users :) [Check it out here! :) available for iOS and Android.]( New and super cool tees! A few completely new tees up in the store last week and some more new ones on the way :) Big thanks for the support and to everyone who wrote in last month with suggestions. Please email tees@justinguitar.com with your ideas and we might just make it! There are some really cool ones in the works, not just funnies! My buddy Mike Dawes has a new live album out October 30th and not only is it a reduced price for pre-order but you could [win a super limited laser engraved Performance 3 capo]( (with the super cool adaptive radius technology) made by G7th (they make awesome capos). It still freaks me out how cleanly he plays this stuff live and it's a great record. [Go check it out :)]( And speaking of friends making amazing music, Ariel Posen has a new single out which, as expected, is a great song with killer guitar tones and something that you're going to want to check out! If I can get my tech together I'm going to do a live video and transcribe some bits of it next week - so make sure you hit the bell on [my YouTube channel]( to be notified when I start! [And get over to his Spotify page and check it out!]( His album How Long was my fave album of 2019 and I still listen to it often, give that a listen too if you're new to his thing. Our little [forum community]( is a very special place and there are some amazing members that deserve some recognition. The incredible forum moderators Richard (close2u) and Lieven (LievenDV) are suggesting a forum member be recognized each month and they win a $50 music voucher and an hour skype lesson with me! The one and only Brian Larsen Brian is a real character and he's won a private lesson before in the monthly competition and I might have posted a link to one of his fun songs before in a previous newsletter. Since he first learned three beginner chords he has been entertaining the forum with his wit and wisdom and idiosyncratic humour in original song form (he wrote and uploaded a song called DEAD in honor of learning the D, E and A chords). Other life stuff... So much going on just now... the biggest is obviously moving out of my house so we can do a massive renovation, which is scary and exciting. I took a kind of office space near my rental pad but it's not one I can make much noise in - the Kemper and headphones are gonna be my new best friends :) I've yet to try recording there yet, or using the green screen - still getting the lighting right but I'm hoping it's going to be fun! Blanket and hat are ready and waiting! I've been reading a lot lately and discovered this incredible tool called [ReadWise]( which if you love reading and taking notes then you should check out. I've always loved books but converted to kindle quite a few years ago and the one thing that bugged me was not being able to highlight passages - well [ReadWise]( allows you to highlight passages and it sends you emails reminding you of things you highlighted and also syncs with my Notion program so I can organize them. Massively useful for my philosophy and psychology study. Free month using the links above too! What I'm reading... Some of the newsletters I get that I really enjoy have some recommended reads in them, not sure if that's something y'all might be into, so thought I'd try it and if they get a lot of clicks might become a regular thing... - [Make Time]( - I'm time poor, so always looking for ways to make the most of what time I got - and this book is full of awesome ideas. Turning off ALL notifications on my phone, game changer! - [Life (Keith Richards)]( - I'm having a second read of this amazing bio, he really is one of music's greatest icons and this book gives some fascinating insights into one of the greatest guitarists ever. - [In Pursuit Of The Common Good]( I would never have thought a book about making salad dressing could be so interesting, but this was a great read! (recommended by Tim Ferris!) What I'm listening to... Are you interested in what I'm listening to? Click the links below and it might become a regular feature! - [Jon Gomm - Deep Sea Fishes]( - Jon literally did a mail-out about this song as I started this newsletter this morning and it's a killer track with a great video. He's a super talented dude! - [Jim Campilongo - Orange]( - I keep coming back to this album - so much ear candy and things I want to absorb, he's such an amazing guitarist. He's got a new record out too! - [Jack Johnson - In Between Dreams]( - There's a lot of crazy going on in the world right now and so one of my favourite uplifting artists is Jack Johnson, somehow always makes me feel better when I listen to him :) What I'm watching... If you have Netflix then I'd urge you to watch [The Social Dilemma](. It's kinda freaked me out and making me consider if I want to be involved with social media at all, thrown me into all kinds of moral quandaries! They way they are using us is wrong on so many levels and I think understanding how they manipulate us could make a real difference in many people's lives. And geez I worry for the kids addicted to it... check it out and make your own call. My guilty pleasure is [BoJack Horseman]( and I think it has some of the best script writing ever. It's NOT for children or anyone easily offended... but it contains classic lines like "when you look at the world through rose-colored glasses, all the red flags just look like flags". Genius. Website Updates The website update is coming along nicely but it's a ton of work for the developer Ben and the Pomegranate team too - but it's looking really awesome and addressing nearly all the problems people mentioned in the survey which is great! The new TV app is moving along and might be out by next newsletter which will be fun. It's just the YouTube video playlists but up there big on your telly without having to cast to your big screen from a laptop - I know from feedback that many of you do that - so just trying to make it simpler. Also, the Spanish Translations YouTube channel is going to be super fun - be a month or two off launch but site translations are going full steam ahead for 2020, German overdubs also in the works :) Going to start with the beginner courses, but if it goes well the whole site will be done by end of 2021 - will be calling out for some volunteers later this year (please hold off on offers until we're ready to organize it well!). OK, I really better get back to finishing off boxing up the studio and getting the last bits into storage or to the studio. Hope you stay safe and well and wishing you love and laughter! Cheers! J.
