June 2019 Newsletter G'day guitar picker! Wow, this year is flying by - so many things to do and the weeks are just flying by! I had one of those amazing life moments last month. A friend of mine (and incredible guitarist) Richard Bennet called me up and said he was playing The Albert Hall with Mark Knopfler and would I like to come. Of course, I went in and at the after show party Richard said that Mark really wanted to meet me. Like what alternate universe has I stumbled into? And so I got a good long chat with one of my childhood guitar heroes and he's a big fan of the site, said he visits regularly and was really humble, kind and inspiring - exactly what you hope your heroes are! I'd known he knew about and liked the site for some time but to hear him excited about it was a real thrill. Might have inspired a bunch of lessons too :) Anyways, enough of my bragging - on with the news! New Lessons Been getting quite a lot done the last weeks, trying to stay inspired by things I encounter in Tammy and Lee's lessons and also trying to get things off the todo list - just so long sometimes I get overwhelmed and can't start anything! • [Sequence: 3-In-A-Line (Minor Pentatonic - Legato)]( • Adding maths sequences to scales is a LOT more fun than it sounds! It sounds and feels cool and is super useful and this sequence is the one I recommend you get started with if you're into the Blues/Rock thing! I taught it to Lee and realized that I didn't have a lesson on it on the website - so here it is! There's a lot more in the lesson than just the notes - some big deal stuff that applies to many areas of playing. There are TAB and GuitarPro files for registered users (you!). • [Sequence: Reverse 3-In-A-Line (Minor Pentatonic - Legato)]( • So once you nailed the regular 3-in-a-line sequence, you can reverse the pattern and you get my all-time personal favourite variation and a bunch of licks I use all the time. It's real fun! Again, there are TAB and GuitarPro files for registered users (you!). • [Lee's Private Lesson 9]( • [Lesson 10]( • The Captain's playing has really improved the last few months and every way and I'm making the lessons a load more practical so he'll actually do the work - keeping it fun is important for him! I think in the future he'll be back to learn the theory and technique stuff but right now it's fun watching him improve so much with fun concepts he can put to use right away! • [Tammy Lesson 4]( [Lesson 5]( • [Lesson 6]( • The lessons with Tammy are going awesome - she's working really hard and practising and exploring things as I ask and she's also making great progress. A lot of great feedback from other teachers about this series and I think it must be fun to watch. We're headed toward more songwriter kind of things with Tammy - not so much Blues and soloing or that kind of thing, but are touching on improvisation and recording more soon! • [$50 Guitar Pick + Can You Hear It?]( • Yeah, I use a real expensive pick and thought it'd be fun to try to hear how different picks sound - recording it was more for myself really but figured I'd give it a clickbait title and stick it up on YouTube for everyone to criticize :) ha ha! [• Transcribing the solo from Tunnel of Love]( • [Transcribing the chords and fills •]( When I decided to tackle this awesome song I filmed the transcribing session live on Youtube for the curious who would like to see me transcribing and the work that goes into song lessons like that. There are two vids, one for the chords and fills and another for the solos! See links to the final lessons below! New Website Features No big feature updates but the big secret project is much further along now and we're hitting the UX (User eXperience) and design stuff now. Very excited. Usernames Looks like there are still some people with email usernames which is really not a good idea. We stopped it being possible now but couldn't when people used google or facebook logins... so we're going to strip out the email address usernames shortly - you will still login using your email - but check your username if it was your email because you can change it easy n your dashboard! Practical Music Theory Oh dear - I've been so busy I've not done much on the theory course this month - I'll do some tomorrow cos I'm almost caught up with myself here and 'urgent' todo list is almost clear! The first couple of grades are free so you get a vibe on what it's like, but the real fun stuff is in Grade 3 where you learn about chords in the key - and remember you get both my old theory books as PDF files (which used to sell for 10 pounds each) with your subscription and it remains at just 9.99 for 6 months - for now ;) [Click Here to check it out!]( New Songs Mostly I worked on the one mega song this last month, the Tunnel Of Love by Dire Straits which of course features the awesome Mark Knopfler. It's been a heavily requested soon and has one of the finest solos of all time at the end - but the view count is nowhere what I expected... will head back to beginner level stuff next month! [One Of These Days - Neil Young]( Oh man I love this song... was trying to decide which NY song to do and was browsing and this one just struck me, must have been in that kind of place... learning (and then teaching) his songs is like a kind of therapy for me! :) Hope you dig it too... one of these days, gonna write a long newsletter... [Tunnel of Love]( Straits (SOLO 1)]( Last month I got the rhythm lesson done and I still needed some practice on the solos - but they're done! this lesson is the main solo in the middle of the song - it's short and sweet but I go into detail on his note choice and 'how it works' and not just the notes! [Tunnel of Love]( Straits (SOLO 2A)]( Now we hit the outro solo over 2 lessons - it's a big solo with a lot to cover but man is it fun. I play through the whole solo at the top of this lesson if you want to check it out. Sounds cool without the backing track which is unusual and cool. [Tunnel of Love]( Straits (SOLO 2B)]( This is the second half of the outro solo with the fast licks and a full slow playthrough at the start for the quick learners who just want a little look and then tackle it on their own! Free Download of Strumming Techniques 1 with every Beginner Songbook 1 purchase! This month only - you'll get a free download of my super popular [Strumming Techniques 1]( (£12.99 on it's own!) with a purchase of the Beginner Songbook Volume 1 :) Limited time offer so don't delay! [Click here to]( The Beginner Songbook 1]( [Beginner Song Course App]( Now that we've done the big song release we're back to planning and designing the next batch of features and there's some cool stuff in the discussions :) If you're digging the app, leaving a review (on The App Store or Google Play) is always appreciated and makes a huge difference to sales - many thanks in advance for taking the time to do it! JustinGuitar Note Trainer App Yeah, it's taken a while but we now have the Note Trainer App available for Android as well as iOS :) It's a super effective tool to learn the notes all over the neck of the guitar and there are 4 modes (games) to help you get there as fast as possible. Great fun for downtime between meetings, on a bus or in the loo! Make all your time productive guitar time! :) Available for [Apple]( and [Android]( - and reviews are greatly appreciated if you dig it! :) If you're one of the Android users who been asking about me porting all my apps to that platfrm, please got check it out and support us moving all the apps over! :) Everyone Loves Guitar Podcast - June 18 A couple of weeks ago I recorded a podcast for this cool guitar show which you might like to check out when it's released on June 18. Craig gets loads of cool guests and some seriously great players on the show and it was a fun chat with him about all kinds of things - guitar and life. Check out the [show website here,]( or search for it on your favourite podcast player! [A]( Posen Workshop!]( * Last 2 places remaining * Ariel Posen is doing a workshop in Italy and you should go! He's one of my favourite players and he came to film a bunch of lessons at my studio and he's a great teacher as well as player and so I asked if he'd like to do a workshop for us! I would have loved to have done it with him, but I'm just too busy, but we worked on the program together and he's got a super schedule lined up that covers blues improv, making changes and of course, some slide guitar and open tunings. Class size is limited to 12 and just 2 places remaining so click the link above for more info and [get in touch with Carlo to book!]( Other life stuff... Things have been super busy here but I'm trying to offload some of the admin to some assistants now so I can get back to being focused on making lessons. Training people up is always harder than doing it yourself but hope it'll be more productive long term. Been a rough day today, up early with daughter, took her to nursery, rushed back for a 9am meeting, then took Smokey (the cat) to the vet (nasty abscess, but he'll be fine - yes he was at the vet last month too!), then walked the dog in the rain (Ziggy is doing much better on recall these days and is finally off the lead a lot!), then catching up on website bits, now the newsletter, and as soon as that's gone I have some filming to do before daughter gets home and parenting begins again. Life is very full. I did spend a week in Crete (Greece) with the family and had a total social media detox and it felt very refreshing! I must be getting long in the tooth but I find the whole social media thing really hard work... I kinda don't think it's healthy for the mind and there are so many other 'real' things I'd rather be doing - but I'll continue to do it for 'work' anyways because a lot of people love it! My daughter got her pick stuck in her Ukulele soundhole for the first time, which was a rite of passage for her and a proud Dad moment! :) She's playing uke a lot more these days and has a great sense of rhythm but still no chords. But man, she never stops singing! Her favourite band is AC/DC and she wanders around the house singing For Those About To Rock and Problem Child so I must be doing something right :) Still working on plans for the UK Workshop in November, got some stellar guest teachers on board and what I think will be an awesome schedule, but gotta find the right venue now! Hopefully, it'll be all sorted by the next newsletter! I better get down to the studio and get filming before the noise arrives home! Wishing you much love and laughter! J.
