Despite the support of a majority of Republicans, Keven McCarthy was voted out as speaker through an [unlikely alliance of Democrats with eight Republicans](, led by Rep. Matt Gaetz, who blamed McCarthy for making deals with Democrats. The question now is, who will succeed McCarthy? He said Tuesday [he didn’t plan to run](for the role again. The angry divisions between McCarthy's supporters and the eight detractors means Democrats will have significant leverage in any vote. Moreover, under the Constitution, the speaker not only doesn’t have to be in the majority party, they don't even have to be an elected official.
