Tampa International Airport will close Tuesday, among others. Governor DeSantis stepped away from the campaign trail this week to deal with the crises at hand: the hurricane and the [tragic shooting]( in Jacksonville. In a news conference on Sunday, DeSantis urged locals to follow the instructions of emergency managers in preparation for the storm. He also condemned the killing of the three black men on Saturday. Later that day, DeSantis [appeared at a vigil]( where the shooting took place and was met with boos when he briefly addressed the crowd, calling the gunman a “scumbag” and saying there was no tolerance for racist violence in Florida. Identity of Jacksonville Shooter Revealed The gunman who shot and [killed three]( black people outside a Dollar General in Jacksonville, Florida on Saturday was 21-year-old Ryan Christopher Palmeter. Palmeter had no criminal history and used a legally purchased handgun and AR-15-style rifle that he adorned with a swastika. Further investigation revealed Palmeter had left behind several manifestos for his family, authorities, and social media detailing his hatred for black people. The Justice Department is treating the shooting as a [hate crime](, calling it an "act of racially motivated violent extremism." Palmeter died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Trump Trial Date Set Donald Trump will [stand trial]( in Washington, DC, on March 4, 2024—just one day before “Super Tuesday” when states across the country will hold Republican primaries for the 2024 election. Trump’s lawyers pushed for an April 2026 trial date, but they were denied by U.S. Judge Tanya Chutkan. This is one of four criminal prosecutions the former president faces, three of which will take place as he campaigns for the GOP’s nomination to take on President Joe Biden.
