This country wasn't built by a few Wall Street bankers, CEOs, or hedge fund managers. I was proud to stand in solidarity with the UAW, who are fighting for a fair share of the value they helped create. As long as I can remember, auto manufacturing has been a middle-class career with good pay. Jobs that you could raise a family on. But over the past few years -- while car companies have seen massive profits and huge jumps in their CEOs’ pay -- UAW wages have only increased 6 percent. Now, the hardworking men and women of the UAW are making their voices heard and demanding rights that will benefit every American worker. My dad used to say, “Joey, a job is about a lot more than a paycheck. It’s about your dignity. It’s about respect. It’s about being able to look your kid in the eye and say, ‘Honey, it’s going to be OK,’ and mean it.” And that could not be more true. It’s not just the UAW who have felt the strain, it’s also their families. They’re constantly being asked to do more with less. Today, I joined these workers and their families on the picket line because this country wasn't built by a few Wall Street bankers, CEOs, or hedge fund managers. It was built by American unions and the middle class. Union workers changed our country for the better with the dues they paid, the picket lines they walked, and the negotiations they sweated through. Just like they’re doing now. Unions raise standards across their workplaces and entire industries, pushing up wages and strengthening benefits for everyone. When unions are strong, America is strong. I am grateful to have been with the UAW today and to have folks like you supporting Kamala and me. Together, we will continue to grow the economy from the middle out and the bottom up.
