Proverbs 25:21 Reflect His Grace Serving food and drink to people who intend to harm us can never be easy. Even as they oppose us, antagonize us, and injure us, God wants us to serve them in the most fundamental, vital way. Perhaps part of the reason may be that in serving them food and drink we’re reminded of their humanity. Just like us, just like all people, they need to eat and drink in order to live. Sometimes it’s easy to dehumanize our enemies and dismiss them as villains to be hated or monsters to be destroyed. When we provide a meal for them, especially if we share in that meal with them, we cannot pretend that they are so different. They may even recognize our humanity and ask for forgiveness. But even if they don’t, they will be shamed by the fact that we’re returning their offense with kindness. We’re not retaliating as they might expect, but reflecting the grace of God. Surprise is often a key element in how God’s grace sneaks up on us. Sometimes the best way to share his love with others is to do the opposite of what they expect, at least in the case of our enemies.
