Lists are compiled annually of the wealthiest, the most influential, and the most famous. Athletes are used to being ranked, and most businesses rely on numbers to determine their budgets, their goals, and their margins. Usually, people are only happy when they’re moving up on the list. However, there’s one list that we should hope to be last on: those people who want to be first in the kingdom of God. Jesus tells us that if you want to demonstrate your passion, commitment, and dedication to the Lord, you must be the servant of all—last on the list. In a dog-eat-dog world where competing means knowing your numerical place, it’s not easy to adopt a mindset of servanthood. Today, let Jesus be your role model for how to be first by being last.
