A handful of years ago, out of sheer self-observation, I learned one sneaky way that I was losing time and energy every single week. And Iâm talking about likeâa significant chunk of time, {NAME}. Making decisions. Or more specifically, indecision. âââ¸ï¸ Quick pause before we dive into todayâs letter! Years ago, I realized how often Iâd put off decisions because I was afraid of making the wrong one. Or because I wasnât sure how I wanted to approach a conflict, or because I was hesitating over which project I was going to tackle first. Whether it was picking out a new rug for my hallway or picking out the perfect denim jacket, my brain and computer had way too many tabs open and Iâd get so overwhelmed Iâd just shut down (my computer and my brain!). My indecision showed itself in how I worked, too, bouncing between tasks and losing steam because I was spending my time trying to do it all, losing focus, draining my energy. Sometimes I would spend a whole hour mulling over what I was going to do about lunch, then switching back to work mode, over and over again until it was dinner time and I was one hangry photographer. If you feel like you struggle with some indecision, here are a couple mental cues to take with you into your day! ⨠Plan ahead! Take 10 minutes the night before and write out the day, especially the parts where you tend to hesitate or lose steam. If you tend to get hung up on meals or what work to start on first, write it all down. Lay out your clothes for the next day, or put your socks right into your walking shoes. Give yourself less barriers between you and a smoother, more free day! ⨠Set a timer. Sometimes Iâll be battling between two seemingly good things. Should I go outside for a walk now or later? Should I send the email in my drafts or delete it? Do I go with the orange or pink on the landing page? Set a timer, and let the hesitation in! All of it! Sit there and verbally process with yourself! Whatever you need to do. Give it whatever chunk of time, and when the timer goes off, choose. ⨠Get a decision partner. Chances are awesome that youâve got a friend who is your walking, talking drink of courage! I mean, isnât it so much easier to choose a YES or a NO sometimes when youâve got a friend who can influence you into the best choice because they *know* you?! So, pick a friend who knows you best and say âCan I text you when Iâm feelinâ indecisive?â That way, instead of dueling with yourself, you can bring the choice to them and know thereâs zero shame! When it comes to the really important stuff, theyâre going to want to give you input! When youâre not sure what you really want, not sure how to show up at work, not sure what role youâre filling, not sure what project is the priority, not sure what matters MOST to youâindecision can flood in and slow down your system. And it keeps you anxious, tired, and ineffective. And I get it. The word sounds a little âgo, be DECISIVE, hurry, donât THINK!â But thereâs actually a bit of magic in that whole âdonât thinkâ part. Overthinking about every single thing that waits ahead of us in a day may very well leave us with reasons, honestly, to just not get out of bed. We lose time, energy, and motivation because weâre spinning in circles! So, imagine a day where you think less, do more, and feel better? Okay, sounds WAY easier said than done, but letâs start somewhere, shall we? Trust me when I say, it gets easier with practice! So, whatever youâre facing this week, remember that youâre smart, youâre talented, youâre worthy of opportunity, and the choice is yours. See ya Thursday! Jenna P.S.
