I know it’s pretty normal to be afraid of the dark when you’re a kid. Heck, I know some grown ups who aren’t really too fond of it! But what about being afraid of the quiet, {NAME}? I spent a lot of my adult life addicted to the noise. Needing there to be a buzz in the air at the very least. Screens, music, distractions, whatever could keep out the quiet. I would get this weird twinge in my chest when the room was too quiet, even when I knew Drew was just in the other room. And it’s because I was afraid of getting quiet enough to hear what was going on in my head. In my soul. I didn’t want to hear what I was really thinking about when it came to my job, my body, my past mistakes, my dreams and hopes, my—everything. There was a time where I was not so at peace with myself, so the thoughts in my head were a little scary to me. And they were very audible whenever I sat in the quiet for too long. I knew I needed to spend time with myself. I knew I needed the quiet and would have to face my fear of it. Eventually, I tiptoed into that quiet. Little by little. A minute here, then 5 minutes, then 10. Then a short walk without headphones. I even started trying to pause and let silence take hold during a conversation to really, really think about the answer to someone’s question. (Quite possibly one of the most awkward habits to practice!) Slowly the thoughts untangled themselves, and I became more brave as I faced them. And my life changed, because I started to listen to them (i.e. listen to me, in the purest sense). In the quiet, I found the truth. And I know a lot of us are afraid of our own thoughts, so we run from the quiet. So many people do NOT really want to know what’s going on in the depths of their mind and seek out the noise of busy-ness to cover it all up. So, that’s why I’m here. Not with a pressure to make you sit in your own quiet for an hour and let it ALLLL out, but an encouragement to spend 1 minute there. To go for a walk without a podcast ringing in your ears. To sit in your car for 5 minutes after your errands and before you go into the house—and see what comes up. I know what you find there might not be easy to hear. It might be beckoning you into big changes, and that IS scary. It’s okay to be scared! Being scared is human. Go into the quiet in your time at your own speed. But go there. Dip a toe in.
