Hello! We live in a glorious time of information. For most of human history, if you wanted to learn

Hello! We live in a glorious time of information. For most of human history, if you wanted to learn from someone, you needed to speak to them directly or read their book. That's it! Now we have YouTube, blogs, podcasts, social media... It's an endless buffet of information passed along from just about anyone that you'd like to learn from. And that's awesome! I've been a huge beneficiary of this abundance of information. But, lately, I've noticed that I can get so easily absorbed in listening to the advice and stories of others that I don't leave any time to listen to MY OWN thoughts and ideas. I listen to podcasts while I run. I put on a YouTube video while I'm putting away the dishes. I scroll endlessly through my Twitter feed. And I started to notice that I was feeling stuck or confused more often. The only times I started to reverse that feeling was when I would STOP filling my own head (or eyes or ears) with the voices of others! Every few months I have to actively remind myself that time spent thinking and processing is productive. We're culturally conditioned to feel self-imposed guilt when we're not "working." And by "working" I mean producing some sort of tangible output. We're constantly focus on being productive in terms of output or even productive in terms of consumption! it robs us of our ability to relax, reflect, and listen to ourselves. Sometimes you don't need the input or direction from someone else. You don't need the best practice. Sometimes your own intuition will lead you to something novel, valuable, and certainly more aligned with your own taste. If it's been a while, consider: - Going for a walk without your phone - Listening to music without lyrics - Exercising - Taking out your headphones I even find that by participating in interviews I'm forced to think for and listen to myself. You might be surprised just how "productive" it feels. --------------------------------------------------------------- On Creative Elements 🎧 [Brennan Dunn of RightMessage]() Brennan Dunn is the creator of [Double Your Freelancing](=), [RightMessage](=), and [Mastering ConvertKit](=). Using cutting-edge techniques in personalization, Brennan has generated millions of dollars in sales of his products – and a lot of that is automated. After starting Double Your Freelancing as a blog in 2015, Brennan realized that he could more effectively sell his courses using personalization on his website and in his email. In 2018, the founders of ConvertKit, Teachable, and convinced Brennan to create a software platform called RightMessage. In this episode, we talk about how Brennan built his broad skillset, the job that changed the way he thought about sales, why he built an agency and ultimately closed it down, and how Personalization creates a better experience for your audience while also increasing your revenue. [Click here to listen]() --------------------------------------------------------------- Thanks for reading! I'm ever so slowly becoming more and more of a morning person. I write about that goal a lot in Life In Progress, because not only does it unlock more time in the day but it's time with high potential for creative output. I'm just much, much sharper in the morning. And when I get up earlier, I can put more time towards some of my personal projects. I can release some of the guilt that I still feel when I'm taking time to think or process my thoughts. I'd love to hear more about how YOU take time for yourself. Maybe it'll give me some ideas that I can try out!
