I was recently in Gatlinburg, TN, for a volleyball tournament ð. Donât worry, this was not a 50-year-old out-of-shape menâs league. I was there with my 8th-grade daughter, and it was a brutal 2 degrees outside. Driving by DollyWorld (although it was sadly not open!) made me think of this storyâ¦Â It was the mid â80s, and Elvis wanted to sing one of Dolly Partonâs songs. The only snag was that his manager wanted half of the publishing rights. [Image source](: vectorportal.com So the queen of country kicked the king of rock ânâ roll to the curb with a resounding âno.â A decade later, another musician asked to record the song â and this time the answer was âyes.â Whitney Houstonâs rendition of âI Will Always Love Youâ won her three Grammys. And it went on to become the best-selling song by a female artist of all time. Dolly Parton â business savant that she is â raked in the profits in the background. âEnough to buy Graceland,â as she put it. In the â90s alone, Houstonâs recording made Parton more than $10 million in royalties. And she didnât have to sing a single note. In fact, all she did in exchange for that goldmine was not perform her own song for a period of time. Sheâs still making money off of it today. In my opinion, thatâs what makes royalties one of the best business models known to man. They require: - A little up-front investment - No ongoing work - And the potential for a high, long-term payoff If it sounds a little too good to be true â thatâs because it is. To make royalties work, you have to be a songwriter. And you have to write songs that are hits. But the best minds in the music game figured out a lucrative way around both of those⦠starting with Michael Jackson. Paid to Do Nothing But Wait In 1985, Michael Jackson outbid Paul McCartney himself to buy the rights to the majority of the Beatlesâ catalog. Every time one of those 251 songs was aired on the radio or used in a TV show or played in an arena, the proceeds lined Michael Jacksonâs pockets. [Image source: wikimedia commons]( Buying a whole bunch of royalties wrapped into one means that you never have to write a single word, you get wide diversification â and best of all, you get a solid, steady cash flow from your investment. Thatâs also the idea behind Hipgnosis, a song royalty company. The company has never written or produced a single song. It owns partial rights to: - 52 of Rolling Stonesâ Greatest Songs of All Time - 25% of Spotifyâs Billions Club - 11 of the songs performed by Taylor Swift on her Eras tour Every time one of those songs hits your ears, Hipgnosis is getting a cut. Let that sink in ð¤¯. Invest on the Front End, Get a Paycheck Forever The royalty business model has spread into other industries. While music royalties are unique, the business model of acquiring passive interests for potential future payouts is compelling across industries. Royalty businesses have been created for pizza and steakhouses, tire & lube change auto shops, and even oil & gas production. Now thereâs one industry thatâs practically custom-built for the royalty model â and its returns put Dolly Parton and Michael Jackson to shame. Out of the Ground, Into Your Pocket This industry is where a lot of real money â Iâm talking billions â has been invested. McKinsey says the industry âcould be set for significant expansion over the next decade.â Based on the number of royalty interests on developing and near-term producing assets, we believe they have good potential for growth. And over the next few days, Iâm going to tell you everything you need to know about it. Hereâs why. Similar to the companies in the music business, their mission is to acquire royalties on strong properties. They owned 18 royalties when they IPOâd just two and a half years ago. Now they own more than 240⦠Iâll provide more details soon so that you can review what I think is a good opportunity. Stay tuned for more details this week!
