If you're able to pitch in, [please click here to make a donation.]( {NAME}, Last week, my opponent Republican State Senator Chuck Edwards voted to pass HB755 – a Don’t Say Gay bill in North Carolina currently advancing through the state legislature. This bill is the latest extreme political attack against our community and rooted in the same animus that spawned Amendment 1 and HB2. Republicans in North Carolina have made a target of our community for decades. I grew up as a gay kid in NC public schools. The only times I remember LGBTQ+ people being spoken about in the classroom, it was with derision or hostility. It made coming out that much harder. We can’t return to that time, and yet bills like HB755 seek to enforce bans on talking about LGBTQ+ people and lives in schools. The bill would also mandate that school staff out youth to their families, even if the youth are not ready to take that step. Governor Cooper has pledged to veto HB755, and advocates across the state are organizing to defeat it. But we know that the damage caused by these bills starts the moment they are introduced. They have a chilling effect and they reverberate against the rhetoric of elected officials like Lt. Gov. Mark Robinson who has made a project out of attacking our community. Now, something else is also true on the ground in NC, which is that support for LGBTQ+ people and equality continues to grow. As more and more people come out, most people in NC have a family member, friend, co-worker or neighbor who is out and whom they love, respect and support. While our political fights wage on, I am more hopeful than ever because I know that ultimately we will prevail. Like Mark Meadows and Madison Cawthorn, Chuck Edwards’ approach to politics is about dividing us. It’s about attacking LGBTQ+ youth instead of protecting them. It’s about trying to fragment our families, our community and ultimately our country. WNC deserves a change - someone in Congress who cares about everyone in our district and shows up every day to fight for policies that lift people up and help us move forward together. I’m running for Congress because we need to do better.
