Madison Cawthorn thinks cleaning his gun during a hearing is patriotic...it’s not

Just last week, Cawthorn decided he felt it was appropriate to fidget with a gun, pretending to clean it, during a Veterans’ Affairs hearing on how toxic chemicals are killing U.S. soldiers. Yes, you read that correctly. Veterans are worthy of respect, and the very real challenges they face require our attention. Instead of doing his job on behalf of the people of WNC, Cawthorn decided to pull a callous political stunt. This was disrespectful and immature. In response to the controversy, Cawthorn’s spokesman asked “What could possibly be more patriotic than guns and veterans?" But Cawthorn acting out during this hearing on Veterans’ health and safety had nothing to do with honoring veterans, addressing their needs, or patriotism. He’s more concerned with building a celebrity brand on the fringes of the far-right. He does not represent our values in WNC, and we deserve better.
