Here was an openly gay, ordained minister stepping forward to run against one of the most extreme Republicans in Congress. I heard things like, “Are you sure people will vote for someone like you?” and “You’ll never win in the South.” But here’s how I see it: There will always be skeptics telling you why you can’t do tough things or why new approaches will never work. And that’s okay, as long as we don’t let that stop us from doing the right thing. It actually motivates me more, because I want to show what’s possible. That’s how we won marriage equality in North Carolina and Mississippi through our organizing work across the South. And it’s how I’ve won two terms as county commissioner.
