Ah, YOUTH. Is it really wasted on the young? Turning 40 has me looking back with compassion and humor at the Young James… I’ve changed so much in my 20 years as an entrepreneur it feels like a MARVEL backstory! Real Talk: I started my business to make money. The young me was shy and awkward. The young me wasn’t too “lit up” at the idea of sharing space with other humanoids. Much less sending the elevator back down. In my youth, I craved independence. I power stapled my self worth to achievement. And I measured the quality of my life by external accomplishments and tangible markers of success — from bank statements to fancy toys. In the words of one Taylor Swift — I hadn’t met the NEW ME yet… Getting older and wiser dispossessed me of many of my youthful ideas and fantasies. Including the fantasy that making enough money would magically solve all my problems. Alas, some of the best things in life only come along with time. When I look back at how I lived then and how I live now…it feels like the script for my life when through a Page 1 Rewrite. This week’s episode of the podcast is one of my favorites because it offers context for how I now make every decision in my business. In breaking down 40 Things I Figured Out Before I Turned 40, I explore the winding road that leads me to courage — specifically, how I learned to face my fears, get over the guilt of REST, and embrace BIG LOVE. There’s a principle called Tacit Knowledge that is often prescribed to explain the wisdom gained with age. The idea of Tacit Knowledge is often closely tied to personal experiences. It’s the intuitive understanding that comes with getting older, walking through the fire, and living to tell the tale. Us “woo-woos” know it as our intuition. Our gut feeling. Our spidey sense. Years of sampling all 31 flavors of challenges — from personal to business — creates a nuanced understanding of effective strategies, interpersonal dynamics, decision-making skills... For entrepreneurs, experience brings not only technical expertise but a wealth of insights derived from years of real-world encounters. This knowledge encompasses the ability to read subtle cues, anticipate trends, and make informed judgments that may not be easily accessed through formal training, continued education or even coaching alone A more resilient and adaptive culture benefits any business. Today, we’re diving into my personal list of 40 Things I Figured Out Before Turning 40. It’s a roadmap of getting to someplace more fulfilling…the hard way. Most of the intuitive knowledge I share here came from heartbreak, setbacks, disillusionment, failure, perseverance…and ultimately — Love. Self love. True love. Unconditional Love. Leading with love is the true north of everything I do. And TRUST and BELIEVE when I tell you my compass was not always calibrated in that direction…. Join me on a journey of self discovery that I hope offers you some laughs and positivity in the face of adversity and doubt. Let’s get into it. Click [HERE]( to listen now!
