Morning Bites: 5 things to know for Tuesday, November 7, 2023 DPP to appeal life sentence for illegal gun The Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) has indicated that it will be [appealing the life sentence imposed on 26 year-old Atlee Murray]( of March Pen Road, St Catherine, who was caught with an illegal gun, with a view to have it set aside. The ODPP, in a statement said the sentence exceeds the punishment stipulated by the Firearms Act. Murray was sentenced on October 26 and ordered to serve 15 years before being eligible to apply for parole. He was also sentenced to nine years for unauthorised possession of ammunition. Man who allegedly stabbed ex-lover over 30 times to appear in court Kurt Griffiths, the man accused of [stabbing his 25-year-old ex-lover, Nalia Dennis more than 30 times]( and leaving her for dead, is to make his second appearance today in the St Mary Circuit Court. The incident took place in November 2021 in front of her auntâs shop and Griffiths had been on the run for almost two years before he was recently apprehended. On the day of the incident he saw her talking to a male friend and allegedly attacked her. Education Ministry stages anti-gang workshops The Ministry of Education and Youth, through its Safety and Security in Schools Unit is observing Anti-Gang Week 2023 which got underway on Sunday under the theme âGang nuh coolâ¦Stay in schoolâ. The observance involves collaboration with Jamaica Constabulary Forceâs (JCF) Counter Terrorism and Organised Crime (CTOC) Investigations Branch, and the Community Safety and Security Branch. According to a bulletin issued by the Ministry, a virtual anti-gang workshop with principals, deans of discipline and guidance counsellors, will be held today. This initiative will be facilitated by the CTOC.
