Morning Bites: 5 things to know for Tuesday, October 31, 2023 National Disaster council meets to discuss earthquake response The National Disaster Risk Management Council has scheduled a meeting for this morning where the response to Monday’s [5.6 magnitude earthquake that jolted the country]( and resulted in some structural damage and a few minor injuries, will be discussed. Minister of Local Government and Community Development, Desmond McKenzie, said the meeting “will look at what took place today (Monday) and make plans in going forward”. He said the country will be updated based on the progress of the information that is being gathered. He was speaking at a Jamaica House press conference Monday afternoon. Flow Jamaica says its system was hardly impacted by quake Flow Jamaica is reporting that over 97 per cent of its fixed and mobile customer base remained connected during the [5.6 magnitude earthquake]( that rocked the island shortly before 11:00 Monday morning. The telecommunications company said that while its mobile network experienced some congestion in the immediate aftermath of the earthquake, this was not unusual given the nature of the disaster and the urgency of persons calling to check on their loved ones as well as the heavy use of data to share videos and images. “The traffic has since normalised. On the fixed network, less than three per cent of the company’s customer base experienced a disruption in service, primarily due to loss of commercial power at some of its facilities,” Flow said in a statement.
