Morning Bites: 5 things to know for Tuesday, October 17, 2023 Tropical depression likely from system moving toward Caribbean - forecasters A tropical depression is [likely to form within the next week]( a system expected to move generally toward the Caribbean, forecasters said Monday. The system, which emerged off the coast of Africa last Wednesday, has a 40 per cent chance of developing in the next two days and an 80 per cent chance in the next seven days, according to an advisory from the US-based National Hurricane Center on Monday. Islands of the eastern Caribbean are now within the cone of the system which at some point is expected to turn northwest. STATIN to release inflation data for September The Statistical Institute of Jamaica (STATIN) will today release the Consumer Price Index (CPI)/inflation data for September 2023. The CPI is one in a series of economic indicators produced by STATIN as part of its objective to provide an integrated set of statistical information on the social and economic conditions of the people of Jamaica. Changes in the indices allow for comparison of price movements over time and are most often used as a measure of the rate of inflation in the island. 550 public health inspectors to be employed - Tufton An additional 550 public health inspectors will be employed to address a severe shortage among this critical group of workers. The announcement was made recently by the Minister of Health and Wellness, Dr Christopher Tufton, during a statement in the Parliament. The additional posts will push to 1,100, the number of public health inspectors operating in the country. Advertisement Rural Girls Rock A youth forum, titled [‘Rural Girls Rock,’]( be held today, at Glistening Waters in Falmouth, Trelawny. The event is part of a series of activities in observance of International Day of Rural Women (IDRW) under the theme: ‘Rural Women Cultivating Good Food for All.’ Spearheading the activities is the Bureau of Gender Affairs (BGA), in partnership with the Jamaica Network of Rural Women Producers. IDRW is celebrated on October 15 each year to give voice to the struggles and achievements of rural women. Inside the Parliament The Joint Select Committee examining the Criminal Justice Bill etc is scheduled to meet today at 10:00 am at Gordon. The committee is reviewing the various bills. TODAY'S WEATHER FORECAST Pockets of showers are expected across different sections of the island today, according to the Meteorological Service of Jamaica, This morning, the forecast is for isolated showers and possible thunderstorms across sections of northern parishes, while it is expected to be partly cloudy elsewhere. In the afternoon, showers and isolated thunderstorms are anticipated across central and western parishes.
