Morning Bites: 5 things to know for Monday, October 9, 2023 Jamaica marks National Heritage Week Jamaicans will this week observe National Heritage Week 2023 from October 9 to 16 under the theme ‘Celebrating a Proud Heritage… Resilient and Strong’. National Heritage Week is observed annually during the week leading up to the third Monday in October which is observed as National Heroes Day, a public holiday. This year [more than 120 Jamaicans will be conferred with national honours]( for outstanding service in various fields during the annual awards ceremony at King’s House. Fern Gully main road closed The Fern Gully main road in St Ann is to be closed for six weeks, starting today, for repairs by the National Works Agency (NWA). According to the NWA, the roadway has deteriorated. The badly rutted surface of the targeted section of the road will be removed and replaced with asphaltic concrete. The road is also to be marked and raised pavement markers (Cats Eyes) installed, the agency said. During the closure, the alternative routes will be Breadnut Hill for vehicles entering and exiting Ocho Rios. The Chalky Hill main road should be used by large trucks and can also be used by vehicles travelling westerly from Moneague to St Ann's Bay and beyond. Motorists may also use the North/South Toll Road. WARE director and architect, Peter Francis, who is also a lecturer in architectural history, said it is important to celebrate the ingenuity of the ‘Taino’ (indigenous Jamaicans) who, he noted, constructed dwellings using what he described as a Spanish Wall Technique.
