Morning Bites: 5 things to know for Tuesday, September 12, 2023 35 years since Hurricane Gilbert Today marks 35 years since Hurricane Gilbert slammed into Jamaica as a powerful category three storm, killing 45 people and leaving an estimated US$3.4 billion in damage. Gilbert developed from a tropical wave on September 8 before slamming into Jamaica about 10:00 am on Monday, September 12, 1988. It would intensify into a category five hurricane after leaving Jamaica and hung around for a week before it dissipated on September 19. Before that, it would take over 300 lives and impacted Puerto Rico, Haiti, Venezuela, Dominican Republic, Mexico, parts of the United States and western Canada.
