Morning Bites: 5 things to know for Monday, July 17, 2023 Holness heads Jamaica’s delegation at EU-CELAC Summit Prime Minister Andrew Holness is leading Jamaica’s delegation to the [Third European Union (EU) Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC) Summit]( which gets underway today in Brussels, Belgium. The two-day Summit ends on Tuesday. Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade, Senator Kamina Johnson Smith, who is part of the delegation, has indicated that she intends to make use of upcoming opportunities to continue to strengthen Jamaica’s engagement with bilateral and multilateral partners, on the margins of the Summit. STATIN to release CPI for the month of June The Statistical Institute of Jamaica (STATIN) will today release the [Consumer Price Index (CPI)]( for the month of June. The CPI is one of the most used of the statistical series produced by STATIN. In its many applications, it directly or indirectly affects all residents in Jamaica. The CPI serves as a gauge for assessing the performance of the economy and it is an important tool used by government in formulating and evaluating many economic policies. Additionally, private researchers, students and the public use the CPI for social and economic studies of the economy, school projects and general information. INDECOM launches probe after two men shot dead by police in Gordon Pen The Independent Commission of Investigations (INDECOM) has launched a probe into the [fatal shooting of two men by the security forces during an operation in Gordon Pen]( St Catherine Sunday morning. The men, known by their aliases ‘Colour’ and ‘Theo’ reportedly fired on members of a police party that entered a yard on Kennedy Lane in the community around 8:30 am. The fire was returned and both men were hit and later pronounced dead. The police were said to be conducting a special operation in the community at the time of the incident which saw residents mount roadblocks to protest the killings. Advertisement Reggae Sumfest street dance is back The Reggae Sumfest street dance will be held today at the Old Hospital Park, Montego Bay. The event will feature a performance by I Waata, with music by DJ Banka & Pappi from Della Soul Sound, Johnny Kool, Dexta Peppa and Crazy Chris. [Sumfest 2023]( kicked off on Sunday with a family fun day at the Catherine Hall Entertainment Centre. It culminates on Friday, July 21 and Saturday, July 22 at the Catherine Hall Entertainment centre for two nights of performances by Jamaica’s top artistes.
