Morning Bites: 5 things to know for Friday, May 26, 2023 Disgruntled teachers resort to industrial action Feeling disrespected by what they perceive to be the Government’s indifferent approach to resolving outstanding issues related to the public sector compensation review, including the non-payment of salaries for some, the island’s teachers have vowed to [resume industrial action today](. According to a notice circulating on social media, the Jamaica Teachers Association (JTA) has adopted a resolution that will see teachers in the parishes of Westmoreland, St Elizabeth, Manchester, Clarendon, St Catherine, Kingston and St Andrew and St Thomas taking industrial action today. The JTA did not specify the type of industrial action. Mining and quarrying down 1.4 per cent in April – STATIN The Statistical Institute of Jamaica (STATIN) is reporting that output prices for April 2023 in the mining and quarrying industry declined by 1.4 per cent, while prices for the manufacturing industry increased by 0.3 per cent. STATIN said the decline in the index for the mining and quarrying industry was due mainly to a similar downward movement in the index for the major group ‘Bauxite Mining & Alumina Processing’. The index for the other major group, ‘Other Mining & Quarrying’ decreased by 0.3 per cent. The point-to-point index (April 2022 – April 2023) for the Mining & Quarrying industry, fell by 5.2 per cent. This decline was attributed to a decrease of 5.5 per cent in the index for the major group ‘Bauxite Mining & Alumina Processing’. Justice Ministry stages justice fair in St Ann’s Bay The Ministry of Justice will today host the Legal Aid Council’s (LAC) Justice Fair at Lawrence Park, St Ann’s Bay, St Ann from 10:00 am to 3:00 pm. According to the ministry, LAC justice fairs continue to play an integral role in the accessibility to justice services by Jamaicans. The fairs also assist the ministry of Justice to fulfil its mandate of ‘taking justice to the people of Jamaica.’ Residents of the parish are encouraged to attend to access justice services such as expungement of criminal records, victim support, legal aid and many others.
