Advertisement Ukraineâs President in surprise visits to London, Paris Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy will today join EU leaders at a summit in Brussels, which German Chancellor Olaf Scholz has described as a âsignal of European solidarity and community.â On Wednesday, Zelenskyy sought Western support for his country in [surprise visits to Britain and France]( pushing for fighter jets to battle Russian invaders in a dramatic speech to the UK Parliament, and then flying to Paris to meet the French and German leaders over dinner at the Elysee Palace. Zelenskyyâs European tour and pleas for more advanced weapons came as Ukraine braces for an expected Russian offensive and hatches its own plans to retake land held by Moscowâs forces. Western support has been key to Kyivâs surprisingly stiff defense, and the two sides are engaged in grinding battles. Zelenskyy thanked the British people for their support since âday oneâ of Moscowâs invasion nearly a year ago, as Prime Minister Rishi Sunak said fighter jets were âpart of the conversationâ about aid to Ukraine. âNothing is off the table,â he said at an evening news conference at a British army base. âWe must arm Ukraine in the short term, but we must bolster Ukraine for the long term.â Zelenskyy said Ukraine needs all kinds of supplies, not just planes, but also ammunition and long-range missiles. âWithout this, there would be stagnation which will not bring to anything good,â he said, calling his visit to Britain âvery fruitful.â Then it was off to Paris for dinner with French President Emmanuel Macron and Scholz, the German chancellor. Zelenskyy was greeted Wednesday night on the steps of the Elysee Palace with a friendly embrace by Macron, and then all three leaders headed inside. The visit marks a turnaround in Zelenskyyâs relations toward France and Germany, which earlier in the war were viewed by many in Ukraine as not doing enough to help. âUkraine can count on France, its European partners and allies to win the war. Russia cannot and must not win,â Macron said before their working dinner. Macronâs office put out a statement confirming that Zelenskyy would attend Thursdayâs summit in Brussels, where EU leaders will pledge their support for the Ukrainian people. Zelenskyyâs travel to European capitals on Wednesday was just his second foreign trip since Russia invaded on February, 24, 2022. In December, he traveled to Washington to meet with President Joe Biden and address the US Congress. Chiefsâ Mahomes says ankle will be ready for Super Bowl Patrick Mahomes says heâs âdefinitely in a better spotâ when it comes to his ailing right ankle than he was for the AFC championship game, and the All-Pro quarterback doesnât expect to be limited by it when he leads the [Kansas City Chiefs against the Philadelphia Eagles in the Super Bowl](. Mahomes said before Wednesdayâs practice at Arizona Stateâs facility that he continues to get treatment on the ankle, which he hurt in the divisional round against Jacksonville, and that it will probably continue up until Sundayâs kickoff. âYou wonât know exactly how it is until you get to game day,â he said. âI mean, I definitely move around better than I was moving last week or two weeks ago. So itâs just trying to continue to get the treatment and the rehab and get it as close to 100 per cent and then rely on some adrenaline to let me do a little bit extra when Iâm on the field.â Mahomes hurt the ankle when a Jaguars pass rusher landed on it late in the first quarter. X-rays taken during the game came back negative, and he returned in the second half to lead Kansas City to the 27-20 victory. Mahomes spent the next week getting treatment on the ankle, and he credited trainers Rick Burkholder and Julie Frymyer with getting him in shape to play for the AFC title. And while he was clearly hobbled by the high ankle sprain, and several times limped away from hits, Mahomes was available against Cincinnati when the Chiefs needed him at the end. It was Mahomes who sprinted on his sore ankle in the closing seconds, then took a big late hit along the sideline, getting Kansas City within range of Harrison Butkerâs 45-yard field goal that punched its ticket back to the Super Bowl.
