‌During my nearly three decades of service, I witnessed and experienced firsthand the sacrifices made every day to safeguard American freedoms. ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ {NAME}, On this day in 1948, President Truman signed the Women’s Armed Services Integration Act into law, allowing women to serve in the armed forces. While Veteran’s Day in November is a time to remember all who served, today is meant to acknowledge the sacrifices made by the women who have answered the call of duty. During my nearly three decades of service, I witnessed and experienced firsthand the sacrifices made every day to safeguard American freedoms. We risk our safety and miss time with our families and loved ones we can never get back -- I cried for 46 days after having to leave my daughter on Christmas eve to travel to Germany, and I can assure you it never got any easier. Yet all too often, the sacrifices made to protect American freedoms are left unrepaid. Every day, millions of veterans struggle to adjust to civilian life: Finding a new career path, learning how to work a 9-to-5 job, affording health care to treat permanent injuries, and coping with the mental impacts of PTSD. Women veterans, especially mothers, also face unique challenges during service and in returning to civilian life. As I reflect on my own service, and the dedication of my sisters in uniform, I encourage us all to recommit to keeping our promises to these heroes by ensuring access to high-quality health care, affordable housing, job opportunities, and educational support. Thank you for reading my note, {NAME}. Take care and walk good, Jackie Jackie Gordon is a veteran running for Congress in New York's 2nd District.
