We think money HAS to be stressful. Otherwise…we’re not doing it right. Can't view this email properly? [View in Browser]() {NAME}, Money stress is one of those things that’s so common, it’s become completely normalized. We think money HAS to be stressful. Otherwise…we’re not doing it right. Ramit Sethi Even people who think they’ve addressed all of their subconscious money beliefs and biases end up uncovering more hangups they didn’t even know they had [when they guest on my podcast](). Why is it so normal to stress about money? If you examine what you were taught about money, you’ll find that most money advice SOUNDS logical, but actually ADDS stress to our lives. You’ve probably heard advice like: - “Keep a budget!” This works for about a week, and then your budget tool or spreadsheet itself becomes a source of stress and avoidance. Why? Because budgets are inherently restrictive. They’re all about what NOT to do with your money. It’s much more rewarding to [think about what you WANT to do.]() - “Set your thermostat 3 degrees higher in the summer!” Uh, will saving money keep me from sweating through my shirt? Because living in a state of constant personal dampness sounds pretty stressful. - “Cut back on lattes!” And make your mornings more miserable. No thanks. How about instead of trying to save $3 here and there, you start asking bigger money questions — like “[How can I make $30,000 more this year?]()” - “Hire a financial advisor!” Sure, but only if they’re flat-fee-based, not percentage-based. Otherwise, that harmless little 1% fee will end up eating a giant chunk of your compounded returns. And THAT’S stressful. - My all-time favorite: “[Renting is just throwing your money away.]()” When you add up the Phantom Costs of home ownership, renting starts to look a LOT less stressful. No wonder you’re stressed, {NAME}. There’s a ton of guilt and pressure wrapped up in our cultural messaging about the “right” ways to treat your money. My goal is to help you identify and untangle your money beliefs, [build your automated Money Machine](), and empower you to use your money the way it works for you — societal expectations be damned. Ramit's post What’s the opposite of stressing about money? Recently, I stayed at a super fancy Italian hotel. It was…just OK. And you know what? I’m fine with that. Ramit in Aman Tokyo On the other hand, Aman Tokyo was incredible. This is something I don’t see discussed very often: When you’re actually living your Rich Life, you’re not worried about squeezing the last drop of value out of every expense or experience. You don’t feel pressure or scarcity. Because you know there are plenty more great experiences in store for you. In this way, your Rich Life can actually shield you from disappointment when something doesn’t live up to your expectations. It’s a surprising and subtle benefit of prioritizing what you actually care about. My advice for less financial stress For some people, thinking about numbers is just inherently stressful. Especially when those numbers indicate your net worth. The good news is that there’s no need to become a math savant just to 1) feel better about your money, AND 2) have more control over your money. I have some advice for you. First, don’t lose sight of why you’re running the numbers. You’re stressed because you want your money to support your Rich Life, right? Keep your detailed vision of your Rich Life in mind as you work through your [Conscious Spending Plan](), and you’ll find the motivation you need to avoid sinking into despair (or worse, hiring a percentage-based financial advisor). Ramit's Twitter post Second, don’t worry about getting it perfect just yet. I go by something I call the 85% solution. Essentially, getting 85% of the way to your goal is MUCH better than just dreaming about doing it (and getting 0% of the way there). Just start. Let yourself be unsure and confused. Or, if you want more support in untangling your financial situation and making a plan, I can help you: Turn your money into a source of joy If you want to identify and solve the money beliefs and practices that are causing you stress —without setting budgets that don’t work, or giving up on things that actually do bring you joy (ahem, lattes) — then you should join me inside [Money Coaching]().
