During the summer of my sophomore year at Stanford, I went hunting for an intern Can't view this email properly? [View in Browser]() {NAME}, During the summer of my sophomore year at Stanford, I went hunting for an internship. I managed to land an interview at Sun Microsystems (the company that created the programming language Java). As I walked in for my interview, I got a good look at my competition. They were all sharply dressed in suits and ties. For a minute, my heart sank. I was going up against MBAs? But I had done a TON of prep for this interview. I’d studied the company. I’d read interviews with the CEO. And most importantly, I’d practiced my answers to common interview questions like ["Tell us about yourself."]() Ramit Sethi Watch my video for more: [How to nail your job interview]() By preparing, I gave myself the gift of confidence. I knew I was ready. And I was right. I got the internship! The combination of preparation and personality earned me several prestigious, high-paying job offers over the next few years—from Google, Intuit, and a multibillion-dollar hedge fund. But instead of taking those jobs, I started I Will Teach You to Be Rich. And this decision led to a [bestselling book](), a [hit podcast](), and [my own Netflix show](). It’s also led to spending a lot of time on the other side of the hiring table. After 15 years of hiring, I’ve noticed the worst mistakes candidates make. Don’t make these deal-killing mistakes during your interview. Interview mistake #1: Assuming you’re there to answer questions NO! You’re there to communicate your key messages. These messages form the same strong, simple narrative you put together when you revamped your resume using my tips from the other day. (If you haven’t done this yet, read my email titled “The 3 elements all great resumes contain.”) Your goal is to actively win over your interviewer. So giving passive answers just won’t cut it Interview mistake #2: Responding at the surface level You might think that a question like “Why do you want to work here?” is really about, well, why you might like to work there. (The answer is generally “I need money to live.”) But the question UNDERNEATH that question is “What do you know about this company?” In other words: Make us feel special. Make us feel like you picked us, and we’re not just a line item on your list of open jobs. Your answer to this underlying question should reflect the research you’ve done on the position and role—AND show how your particular talents and experience are perfectly matched. Interview mistake #3: Justifying or apologizing for your work history Logan, an IWT student, shared this story with me: [IWT student story]() Notice Logan’s confidence in answering a “gotcha” interview question. When you can use an unusual part of your work history or life experience to your advantage, you’re refusing to be gotcha’d. Dream Job feedback More like this in my program, [Find Your Dream Job]() Interview mistake #4: Being generically positive Since you’re reading this, I’m going to assume you’re not one of the folks who waltzes into a job interview complaining about how much they hate their current boss. (That’s an instant dismissal from me.) You know it’s better to focus on the positive attributes of your current work and your potential impact in this new role. But that’s where the average candidate stops! They’ll give a blandly positive answer like: “I want to work at Acme because the company does great work. There are a lot of smart people here and I think I can do a good job.” Doesn’t really blow your socks off, does it? Instead, practice bringing more specificity into your interview responses. Specificity is more memorable than generality—and it’s yet another chance for you to show you’ve done your homework. A more specific version of the answer above would look like this: “I want to work for Acme for three key reasons. First, the work you’re doing is making a huge impact on the way teams collaborate, and I’m really interested in helping people learn to work together better, especially as remote work becomes more popular. Second, I’m confident I can make a huge contribution given my experience doing X, Y, Z. And third, I think you have some of the smartest people in the world working here, including John Smith, who strikes me as one of the leaders in the team collaboration software space.” Much better, right?! That’s the kind of prep work that high earners put in to get the compensation they deserve. There’s much more like this inside my career program Everything I’m sharing with you comes from [Find Your Dream Job](): my step-by-step program to help you level up your career and finally enter the 6-figure club (or get a hefty raise, if you’re already in the club).
