Success is rarely a dollar amount. Most people want a specific lifestyle. In the workplace, this means having a Dream Job that allows the flexibility you want. This might look like: - Never having to do the daily commute to the office - Having a schedule that lines up with when you’re most productive - Taking a spin class in the middle of the day - Picking up your kids from school every afternoon - Living in different countries for several months at a time [Ramit] Great way to work, highly recommend. A LOT of people dream about working for big, prestigious companies like Google, Apple, Meta, Salesforce, or Amazon. And that’s fine! Many of these companies check every box for what someone may want in a Dream Job: 6-figure salaries, equity, bonuses, unlimited PTO, plus having remote work flexibility. Remote work [became a perk for many during the pandemic](), and we got a taste of the freedom and flexibility this lifestyle can bring. But full time remote work may not be a permanent perk — many of these companies are now [calling employees back to the office](). 90% of companies will return to office by 2024 If you enjoy in-person work, that’s great! There are a lot of [benefits to working in an office](), like a sense of community, improved mental function, and career development. But if your Dream Job includes having the flexibility to work fully remote, now is the time to start polishing up your negotiation skills to keep these perks. Or to start looking for a new gig. This [recent August survey of 1,000 business leaders]() revealed 90% of companies plan to have employees return to office by the end of 2024 — and 28% say they will threaten to fire employees who don't comply. Some companies have already implemented changes to their office attendance policies: - Managers at Google will [start tracking attendance](), and even factor this into job performance reviews. - Amazon CEO Andy Jassy announced employees need to comply with new policies and come back to the office for at least 3 days a week — or “[their days are numbered]().” - [Even the tech company Zoom]() — whose video conferencing software allowed us all to effectively work remotely during the pandemic — is asking all employees within 50 miles of an office to work in person 2 days a week. Why flexibility matters When an employee can’t work in the location they would like, burnout rises and engagement drops, [according to a survey by Gallup](). That’s because these employees simply don’t feel well-positioned to do their best work or live their best life. No one does their best work feeling confined or trapped. Here at IWT, we don’t have any offices to return to, because [we’ve always been fully remote](). Our employees LOVE having zero commute, spending less time getting ready for work, and having a flexible schedule that easily allows for doctor visits, midday yoga, or picking up the kids from school. And because they love this flexibility and freedom, it creates the right environment and puts them in the right headspace to do incredible, meaningful work.
