The first time I woke up and realized I had no idea what day it was…I won’t lie To view this email as a web page, [click here]() {NAME}, The first time I woke up and realized I had no idea what day it was… I won’t lie. I was a little rattled. [Where am I? What day is it?] Yep, just like that. Even months after I went full time on building my business, I was so used to having to be somewhere, having to wake up at a certain time, having to do something for someone right now, that I still occasionally woke up feeling like someone had tossed a glass of ice water in my face. Let me be the first to tell you: That gut-punch goes away. And what it turns into is the most luxurious, relaxing, indulgent s p a c i o u s n e s s. I’ve learned to wake up slowly. No alarm. No need to even know what day it is, unless I planned brunch with a friend. Then I just lie under the covers for a few moments, enjoying the morning sun. I’m not a cat person, but I’m pretty sure this is how cats feel all the time. Even reaching for my phone before getting out of bed stopped being an escape route (quick! need distraction!) and started being a form of entertainment. Hmm, how much did I make last night? [Iphone] To this day, seeing that my business paid me while I was asleep is nothing but SATISFYING. Running a business feels incredible I want you to have this feeling. Actually, I want you to have a lot of feelings that come from running your own successful business: - The ultimate validation of getting your first purchase from a total stranger - The simple joy of ordering appetizers or dessert or both (instead of saving $12) - The comforting satisfaction of putting your bills on autopay - The self-affirming confidence to say “I’m a business owner” - The utter freedom of deciding to take the afternoon off to read, or hit the pool, or do whatever you want, because this is the life you built for yourself The moment you decide to start your business, you’ll start to taste these feelings. And I’ll let you in on a little secret: What you’re really tasting is CHOICE, in areas of your life where it might feel like everything has already been decided for you. Being in the driver’s seat of your own life, deciding what you’d be excited to sell, talking directly to customers…all of these are choices. Your choices will show you your strengths, and reveal your shortcomings. That’s part of growing into the best version of yourself. Starting your business can be a [Big Win]() for your finances — absolutely. But that sense of excitement and possibility tells you it’s also a big win for your personal growth. It doesn’t matter if your goal is to make $1,000/month extra so you can save for a fun trip, or $10,000/month so you can quit your job. Side hustles are real businesses, too (and [nearly 40% of Americans already have one]()). When is the right time to start your business? Too many people wait for the “right time” to do something that they’ve always wanted to do. You’re never going to look up and see the stars spelling out “NOW, {NAME}!” You just have to decide to do it. That said, I know it’s helpful to have some criteria to work from. After more than 15 years of working with thousands of students who wanted to start their own businesses, here’s what I’ve observed about the “right time.” You’re ready to start your own business if: - You’re excited by the idea of working for yourself — because you want more control over your schedule, income, and future. - You’re able to weather the emotional ups and downs that come with trying something unfamiliar and new. - You’re feeling bored or unchallenged at work, and you’re ready for a change. - You don’t need your new business to instantly pay all your bills. That’s too much pressure. - You’re interested in making your first dollar more than spending months playing with brand colors and fonts and not actually selling anything. [Ramit's post] If you want to build your business using a proven system instead of trying to figure it all out for yourself — with the support of other entrepreneurs — then now is actually a GREAT time. [And you can start here right now](). Start from a position of possibility I advise my students to start small. Stay nimble. Start getting paid before you pour months of time and thousands of dollars into a venture that turns out not to even be something you enjoy doing. Allow yourself to be open to all the possibilities. And ask yourself: What would I do with an extra $500 or $1,000 or $5,000 every month? What if my side hustle could grow into a business that replaced my full-time income? What if my business did even better than my wildest dreams? That last one is my favorite to ask, because as most people achieve their goals, they unconsciously move the goalposts. So they never give themselves credit for their wins — even when they end up accomplishing something inconceivably huge and amazing! So do me a favor. Start dreaming now. Write those dreams down. And make a practice of looking back, so you won’t forget to celebrate how far you’ve come. [Cheers] Sleeping in, [Signature] P.S. Everyone dreams of waking up to find more money in the bank. But unless you’ve got a rich relative at death’s door (and that person really really likes you), it’s highly unlikely that you’ll just get a windfall dropped in your lap. That windfall isn’t coming. But you can make your own. I’m hosting a free live event next week all about how to start a business THIS month and start making those dreams you wrote down a reality. [Click here to register]().
