He actually used to get the best grades in school without even trying. "I don't understand why they make this so easy," he would say. Even though he hardly did any work, his parents praised him as their âsmartest son." Then college came. His grades weren't so great anymore. "I could do better if I wanted to," he said. "I just don't care about school." Truthfully, he wasn't really sure HOW to get straight Aâs anymore. He wondered if he'd actually sabotaged himself by not learning how to study ⦠but it was too late to learn now, right? At least he thought so. Graduation rolled around and years went by. By 25, his friends all seemed like they'd picked a career, not just a job. But he jumped from one job to the next, never sure what he wanted to do. Wasn't he the smart one? How come he'd always been the best ⦠and now his friends seemed to know something he didn't? In the back of his mind, he had a haunting worry: Have I peaked and not even realized it? [Comment online] A comment I found online. Think about how hard it must be to feel this way. Take my other friend. She recently got promoted as a senior consultant and she has two kids. Sheâs been working out for years. When her friends see her, they say, âYou look amazing!â What they really think is, âHow do you find the time?â or, âI wish I could look like that.â Is she better than my friend who had trouble focusing on his career? Better than the commenter above? NO. But she figured out how to follow through. Youâre not âlazy,â youâre frozen Growing up, my parents would even call me âsusthâ (Punjabi for lazy) every once in a while. I may have given my parents a reason to say this to me sometimes. [Young Ramit] Throwback to when my business model was trading lunchbox snacks After going through years of being indecisive and feeling guilty for not following through, I finally cracked the code. I found the motivation to actually build a business and an amazing team. I [wrote a best-selling book](). And recently? I landed my very own [show on Netflix](). The first step? I stopped calling myself lazy. Most people who call themselves lazy think itâs a half joke. When I told an Instagram reader, âSorry, I donât help people who call themselves lazy,â he immediately started backsliding: âWell, itâs just a joke...I donât really think that.â But if youâve been calling yourself something for years, you start to adopt behaviors that match up. When I called myself a skinny Indian guy, guess what? I didnât eat enough or do the right type or amount of exercise to put on muscle. Once I changed my language, I could change my behavior. [Ramit Sethi] The second step? I took one small action to get me closer to my goal. I moved myself out of being frozen. Never before in history have we been swamped with so many choices. We have so many voices telling us what we should be doing. We donât want to be seen as a job hopper, a quitter, or someone who only starts and never finishes. So we just dream but never take action. We freeze. One small action This week, I'm going to be talking about FOLLOWING THROUGH. Tomorrow, I'm going to share 3 tactics I use to go from a "dreamer" to a "doer." And on Wednesday, I'll dive deep into [my program]() that arms you with tested strategies and tactics on how to stop talking about success ⦠and how to kick yourself into high gear to actually DO it. This week is going to be a real eye-opener. Stay tuned. For now: Whatâs one thing you could have achieved years ago if it wasn't for that voice in your head saying âIâm so lazyâ? What could be within your grasp right now if you could unlock your potential? And whatâs the smallest action you could take â TODAY â to get started? Reply and let me know. I read every email.
