Yesterday, I told you about Mindy and Carl, recent podcast guests who are worth To view this email as a web page, [click here]() {NAME}, Yesterday, I told you about Mindy and Carl, [recent podcast guests]() who are worth $4M but are scared to spend money on restaurants and vacations. Today, I have an update! After we spoke, Carl finally learned to enjoy their money a little more, even booking an Alaskan cruise next year for his entire family (Mindy, their daughters, Carl’s mother, Carl’s sisters, and their partners). “My mom has always dreamt of this, but has never been able to pull the trigger on it for herself,” Carl said. “So I look forward to being able to take all nine of us on this pretty cool trip.” I loved hearing that. [Ramit clapping] In the end, Mindy and Carl took baby steps toward learning how to spend their money and truly live their Rich Lives. They are emerging from the tunnel vision they had for so long (save, save, save) and starting to realize that their money can be used for things that make them happy. It’s good to save money … the right way Of course, saving money is necessary and should be a part of your financial plan. But it’s important to do it the right way. There’s tons of advice out there on saving money. Most of that saving advice is not good. You've got random people on the internet suggesting we sacrifice our lattes today to somehow amass a fortune in retirement eons from now. If you were to cut out that morning coffee expense, at the end of the month you’d find yourself deprived of that daily joy, battling a severe caffeine withdrawal headache, and staring at a bank account balance that looks almost exactly the same as it would’ve anyway. There are smarter ways to manage your money that won’t sacrifice your happiness. My students learn to focus on the Big Wins that matter. [Ramit's post] The beautiful part about Big Wins is you do the work up front — and they pay rewards for the rest of your life. For example, one $5,000 salary negotiation in your 20s can be worth over $1M over your lifetime. How many lattes would you have to cut to get that? Next time you hear the same old tired advice of keeping a budget, or cutting back on daily coffees, ask yourself: Has that really worked for the millions of people who’ve tried it? Learn how to spend money People love to rattle off ideas about how to save, but you will hardly find any advice about how to spend money. - When does it make sense to buy something just because you want it? - How do you know how much money you can spend each month? - What do other people your age with your income spend their money on? - Where do you learn how to DO this all? Where do you learn how to spend money the right way? For most people, the answer is nowhere. They spend their lives never addressing their stress about money, not enjoying a Rich Life, and always thinking about the next stack of bills on the counter waiting to be paid. Since my Netflix show came out, I have received thousands of emails asking me for financial help. Most people who reach out to me are seeking guidance, but have no idea where to begin.
