I get asked all the time: How do I find the motivation again? To view this email as a web page, [click here]() {NAME}, I get asked all the time: How do I find the motivation again? My answer is always the same. You don’t. Productivity is not about motivation! If you think it is, you’ve already lost. Productivity is about finding what you really want. (That’s why I asked you what your perfect morning routine looks like a few days ago. For many of you, it is aligned with your Rich Life.) Once you understand what you want, you then build the systems to make it work. The goal isn’t trivial things like reaching inbox zero. The goal is to perform your best day in and day out, over the course of months and years, working on what matters to you. I think of true productivity as a pyramid with three tiers. [3 Tiers of Productivity] Most people love the details and skip the fundamentals. Tier 1: The Fundamentals. These things are non-negotiables like sleep, health, and a usable workspace. Everyone ignores these things because they’re not sexy. But if you don’t get these right, nothing else matters. Think about it. You can’t handle an intense morning workout and a day of meetings if you’re operating on 4 hours of sleep. Sure. You might get away with it for a day or two, maybe even longer, but eventually it’ll catch up to burn you. And you can’t work if your workspace is in shambles. For example, I couldn’t write as much as I do, and hold zoom meetings if my computer and internet weren’t working. So if your fundamentals aren’t in place, stop reading. Go take care of them. Nothing else in this email will help you if you don’t have these nailed down. Tier 2: Psychology. These are the mental skills to deal with setbacks, set boundaries, be positive and resilient, and reframe problems. No productivity hack or app can deal with these. Only you can do this work. It’s hard. Tier 3: Details. This is where stuff like calendars, apps, and random tactics come into play. But everyone starts with focusing on these! That’s like asking a world-class weightlifter what socks they wear to workout! Sure, they probably have preferences. But on the list of important things, socks are probably at the very bottom. People who are at the top of their game… I’m talking about CEOs, bestselling authors, entrepreneurs, elite athletes… they have the first two tiers mastered, before they dive into details. I've been fascinated by people like this for years. People who operate head and shoulders above everyone else. Over the years, I peppered them with questions to verify what they did differently. Was it their habits? Mental frameworks? Were they simply “gifted” from birth? I found that they didn’t rely on motivation. It’s fleeting for everyone. Instead, they ride motivational waves to put the systems in place so that they can continue to perform when they know they won’t have it. My mentor and professor at Stanford, B.J. Fogg, who is an expert on behavioral change, calls it “surfing the motivation wave.” [2023-06-21-IWT-What to do when you’re not motivated_Ramit Sethi with mentor B.J. Fogg] B.J. Fogg. My mentor and old professor at Stanford. Isn’t that funny? Most people look for motivation and get upset when they can’t find it. But people who have Mental Mastery plan on having periods when their motivation will be low, and work with it. That’s a complete paradigm shift! I collected more insights like this. Over time, I built a map of this Mental Mastery from people who were at the top of their game. I wanted a blueprint to tap into this power source. I tested each of these in my own life. I've shared some of them with my close friends and colleagues. The impact blew me away. And now I want to give them to you. I’ve put everything I’ve learned into my Mental Mastery program.
