We’re all told “Follow your passion!” To view this email as a web page, [click here]() {NAME}, We’re all told “Follow your passion!” and “Find a job you love so you never have to work a day in your life!” But nobody ever shows us HOW to find that job we love. Are we supposed to just sit around and wait for inspiration to hit us like a bolt of lightning? Or take some worthless assessment test? (You like cooking? Become a chef!) A lot of people who don’t know what their Dream Job is are stuck because of this inner monologue they have which is holding them back. Does any of this sound familiar to you? “I don’t know what my passion is, so this job is fine.” “I don’t want to close the door on anything and sticking around here will give me more opportunities, right?” “I don’t have a passion at all. And for the thing I actually like doing…there’s no money in it!” I always recommend starting with psychology when trying to figure out your Dream Job. Until you understand your own inner psychology, you’ll always be stuck. Even when I was in people’s houses on my Netflix show giving them financial “tactics” — a lot of times it was their psychology holding them back. [Ramit with guests] What does your Dream Job look like? This question sounds so simple, but it’s actually really hard for a lot of people. That’s why people remain trapped for 5, 10, or even 30+ years in a career that makes them miserable. If you’re not sure where to start — or if your Dream Job even exists — it’s all about using a systematic approach to dig into your own skills and interests. That way, instead of just throwing darts at a jobs list, you can find real Dream Jobs and test if they’re a good fit for you before you apply. People tend to look for jobs that are similar to what they currently do, but without their current boss, schedule, or team. That's a trap. Instead of focusing on problems with your current role, what if you focused on what you want? Let’s take a few minutes to ask yourself a few questions and figure out what your Dream Job actually looks like. This exercise is straight out of my Find Your Dream Job program which I’ll tell you more about later this week. Dream Job Exercise When I ask people “What does your Dream Job look like?” they usually they tell me things like: “I want to work with innovative companies, add value, and leverage my unique skills.” This type of response is all jargon. I call it “marketese.” You need to get ultra specific. Here’s a great example of a Dream Job description from one of my students: “I’m looking for a Creative Director role at an ad agency that works with major car brands and is 100% remote.” Love it! Notice how specific it gets — the type of company, even the location. So ask yourself this: - What is your Dream Company? - What is your Dream Role? - What kind of lifestyle do you want? When you’ve answered these questions, step back and reflect for a moment. Do you have clarity and actually know what you want? Did you just describe your current job? If not, what are you going to do about it? Write down your answers. Bonus points if you send them to me — just reply to this email. I read every response. [Signature] P.S. Working in your Dream Job is all about doing something that aligns with your passion, values and personal goals. So you can show up everyday feeling motivated, surrounded by great people, feeling positive energy and a burning desire to achieve greater success. You shouldn’t feel like you’re “clocking in and clocking out” just to collect your paycheck and feel babysat, trapped, forgotten, underappreciated and stuck. Most importantly: Your Dream Job perfectly fits your life TODAY. [Cass and Ramit] I took this picture in the afternoon on a Tuesday. I designed my work life intentionally so I could do stuff like this. And when your life changes again in a few years — you have kids, your kids go to school, you move, your parents get older — you can change to a role or job that’s right for you then. Don’t wait for “some day” and stay stuck. Take action now, answer the 3 questions above, and figure out what your Dream Job looks like. On Thursday, I’ll show you the simple, easy way to get that job faster than you think.
