Try to piece together what to do from a variety of sources, and hope you don’t screw it up. - Hire an expensive financial planner to do it all for you. Yes, it's easy — someone else does it for you. Just don't calculate how much they're actually fleecing you for this service. You'll be shocked. You can certainly figure out personal finance on your own. I did. But it took thousands of hours (and dollars) to do. That’s why many people choose option 2. So let’s take a closer look at those fees. Many financial advisors will charge you a 1% AUM, or assets under management, fee. Sounds good, right? Did you know that a 1% fee will cost you 28% of your lifetime returns? Let’s get even more specific. If you’re investing $10,000 per year for 40 years, a commission-based financial advisor could cost you $439,386.20. If you’re investing $25,000 per year for 40 years, a commission-based financial advisor could cost you over $1 million. And those fees go straight into a commission-based advisor’s pocket! [gif] Financial advisors as they gleefully deposit your money into their bank accounts I have no problem paying premium prices for great value.
