WHAT IN THE HELL IS HAPPENING RIGHT NOW?? To view this email as a web page, [click here]() {NAME}, WHAT IN THE HELL IS HAPPENING RIGHT NOW?? [How to Get Rich] [Watch the show here]() I have no words. I genuinely never expected this show to do so well and for so many people across the world to be watching it. THANK YOU! Since I have literally idea no idea how to handle having a hit TV show (even writing that sounds insane), I’m just going to share 3 more surprises about filming [How to Get Rich](). SURPRISE #1: The world wants you be vanilla. But the minute you are, they abandon you. The world wants you to wear the same clothes as everyone, eat the same food, watch the same TV shows, even talk the same. Since I started my site, I’ve gotten unsolicited feedback: - I don’t like the name of your book! - Why are you selling your own programs (like how to [start a business](), [find a dream job,]() and get [money coaching]())? You should give everything away for free! - Teaching people how to earn money is a scam! What about helping left-handed Canadians who are 48 years old but didn’t start investing until 2 months ago? They want me to be vanilla. If the world had its way, I would write articles called “How to build financial literacy” with a boring list of obvious tips like “Spend less than you earn”... ...and the minute I did that, they would stop reading. [Ramit Tweet] Follow me on [Twitter](), [Instagram](), and [YouTube]() The world wants you to be like everyone else. People genuinely believe that’s what they want, until it happens, and they abandon you. This subtle drive to make everyone vanilla even happens in surprising ways. Maybe you’ve heard your parents say “You’re throwing money away on rent.” Why would you want to buy a house in your 20s if you don’t even know where you’re going to live in 3 years? Or look at this comment from my [YouTube channel](). [Comment on Ramit's YouTube] Let me translate this snarky comment: “Thanks for cursing! That means YouTube won’t monetize, which means I don’t have to sit through ads!” Years ago, I decided not to live my life by the algorithm. I curse because I hear something unreal and I go, “What the fuck are you talking about?” I don’t care if YouTube prioritizes me or not. I care about being honest. I can make money later. On top of that, do you think I care about making $100 from video ads? why would I care about making a few pennies from YouTube? I constantly talk about focusing on the Big Wins, not chasing pennies. For the Netflix show, I knew what the “vanilla” option would be: me going around to couples, berating them for spending too much on cucumbers, then pulling out a red pen and going through their budget, line by line Vomit Who wants to watch that? I don’t even want to film that! You couldn’t pay me enough to tell someone they’re spending too much on macaroni and cheese. I just don’t believe in the concept. Ironically, each time I made the conscious choice not to be vanilla -- to truly lean into what I believe -- I lost a few people, but built a much stronger bond with the people who stayed. I’m proud that I’ve never led people astray. No scam NFTs, no absurd make-a-million-dollars-overnight schemes, none of it over a 20-year career. Repeat that decision for two decades and you develop a very strong point of view...and more importantly, a powerful bond with people who know exactly what I stand for. The world wants you to be vanilla. But only you can be you. Surprise #2: You can build the kind of business you want to.I was shooting the show for 4 months, doing 14-hour days, 6 days/week, all around the country. But you had no idea. That’s because of the IWT team. [Ramit and the IWT Crew] My amazing IWT coworkers in LA for the Netflix premiere party What an awesome team. They got to meet our students, the cast of the show, my family, and the Netflix execs. I LOVE this because most of the day, we spend our time in Slack, sending messages and creating the material behind IWT. But for a brief moment, they got to meet the people whose lives they impact. Before our events began, I took a second to thank them and tell them that my face is on screen, but the only way that any of this happened is by having a team that shares my philosophy of a Rich Life. Over the last 20 years, I’ve slowly dialed in my vision of the IWT business. I wanted to build a small team of amazing people who help millions of our students live Rich Lives. Like me, every IWT employee is focused on the long term. It’s in our culture, and it’s who we recruit, so when we talk about things like long-term investing and putting in the work, it happens int the company, too. If you see anything from us -- including this email! -- the team helped produce it. A huge, huge thank you to the IWT team, who makes everything we do possible. And if you want to start your own business — even if you don’t have an idea yet — [join my Earnable program](). Surprise #3: This show is realThe funniest part about the premiere party was all the people from my “normal” life (my family, my coworkers, my friends) meeting the cast. [Ramit and Cast] I’ve never done a TV show before. I always wondered, “how can this be real?” What kind of editing do they do? When you meet them in person, you realize....the show is real. What you see on screen is what you get! All I knew before meeting them was their name and financials. I didn’t even know what the problem is. The magic of the show is you and I get to figure it out together. I love how open people are by inviting me into their homes and sharing the intimate details of their finances. They do it on the show and [on my podcast](). I worked with some people who’ve done reality shows (e.g., dating shows). Those are different. In those shows, some of the editing can change what actually happened. It’s mind-blowing to see what those editors can do. In this case, when you see me saying something, that’s what I really said. If anything, I wish we could have included ALL the footage. But that’s for another day.
