Welcome to more behind-the-scenes emails of my new show To view this email as a web page, [click here]() {NAME}, Welcome to more behind-the-scenes emails of my new show, How To Get Rich, which is [now streaming on Netflix](). First off, a huge THANK YOU to the tens of thousands of people who’ve sent me messages in the last couple of days from Portugal, Brazil, Luxembourg, India, South Africa, the US, Canada, and dozens of other countries. It is truly an honor to know that you’ve watched my show. So why did I do a Netflix show? It actually wasn’t as simple as saying, “It’s Netflix!” Here’s how I thought about the decision. If you want to have an unconventional career, you have to make unconventional decisions. For example, I turned down multiple book offers until I was ready to write my book. I knew I wasn’t ready — I didn’t have my system dialed in, I wasn’t sophisticated enough to communicate my ideas in a simple way, and I didn’t have the audience I wanted. Knowing when to say no is almost as important as knowing when to say yes. Sometimes we’re so concerned about whether we can do something that we don’t stop to ask if we should do it. This is why, when I caution people against buying a house with 3% down, they look at me like I’m crazy. “But the bank told me I can!” But that doesn’t mean you should. I’ve been running my business for 20 years. This was a huge new challenge. I didn’t know anything about landing a TV deal, shooting a show, or bringing it to market. I didn’t even know how to find an entertainment lawyer! I’ve been approached about doing a TV show for years, but I said no. Every major network has been sniffing around for a money show because it hasn’t really been done since Suze Orman on CNBC, which was popular in the early 2000s. But each time I got approached, I said no. I turned down the offers for a few reasons. First, most offers came from production companies. Lots of production companies (not all, but a lot) are like ambulance chasers. They find people with audiences, get on a Skype call (they love Skype for some reason vs. Zoom), and tell you why you’re the greatest person ever and “America needs to hear from you,” and then they package you up into a pitch and try to sell it to networks. 99.999% of the time, it goes nowhere. A few years ago, interest really picked up. Around 2019, something changed. I started getting more inbound inquiries, some directly from networks. I wasn’t really thinking of doing a show, but I got curious. (Everyone in Hollywood gets this, but I didn’t understand it at the time: Take the meeting. Find out what they’re thinking. It can’t hurt.) In my business, I turn down most things, so I turned down a lot of these calls. But when I started taking the calls, I learned a lot. I realized that if I ever did a project like this, I wanted it to be on a network that reaches the audience I love: everyday people. When the email from Netflix came in, I was ready. I’d developed my philosophy over 18 years. It’s been battle-tested with millions of people who’ve used it in all different situations: People with $500,000 of debt, $13 million of net worth, international readers, spouses where one is an overspender, etc. When you truly, deeply understand something, you’re also more comfortable talking to people about it. Most of all, I love having FUN talking about a Rich Life! What could be more fun than going to visit someone, in their own house, and helping them figure out how to live a Rich Life? I was ready!! I wanted to dimensionalize my philosophy. I’ve written thousands of blog posts and newsletters. I’ve recorded hundreds of hours of [my podcast](). To dimensionalize it — to go deeper — that means showing how my philosophy works and how to apply it to your life. In other words, another 100 blog posts or emails wouldn’t make a difference, but doing something totally different would. Over time, I’ve decided that for the important things, if I can’t do them exactly how I want to, I’ll just wait. This is new. In my early 20s, I would say “yes” to everything. That was my Season of Life — growth, or saying yes to everything to create more opportunities. But now, because of my business, age, and the ability to be selective, I’ve become choosier. That means if I’m going to do a huge project, I’d rather wait until everything lines up rather than jumping at the first opportunity. (I couldn’t have done the same thing in my 20s.) Netflix gave me broad creative control. Netflix didn’t want to dictate the details of how we made the show. They wanted my vision. And throughout the project — even when they gave notes — they honored the vision of what we wanted to create. I’m an executive producer on the show, which means I had a say. But most of all, I worked with a team that deeply understood we wanted to create something different. Big shoutout to Damla and Jackson from Netflix, to Bianca, our showrunner, Ben, Lauren, Valkos, Brian, Jackson, Patty, and so many others at the network, in the field, and in post. I finally understand why actors who win awards spend the entire time thanking others...because these projects are all about the people you work with. And I was extremely lucky with this team.
