Get ready for a thought-provoking journey. Now the best ads speak directly to a reader. They make people want a product, instead of just telling them the cheapest way to get it. Letâs look at this timeless classic of an ad: [Jonathan Goldsmith] "I don't always drink beer, but when I do, I prefer Dos Equis. Stay thirsty, my friends." You know who he is â The Most Interesting Man in the World! The man smokes Cuban cigars, surrounds himself with beautiful women, and drinks Dos Equis beer. Clever, fun, and engaging. And this long running campaign is absolutely phenomenal. Itâs also unforgettable because of the short, sweet, and memorable tagline. This is what so many others miss when they start thinking about marketing themselves or their business. Effective communication is all about meeting your audience where they are, being playful, and being candid about what you want, as well as what you can offer. Even outside traditional marketing -- this concept is also relevant when you want to connect with a busy, important person. Maybe it's a hiring manager at a company you're interested in working for. Maybe it's someone you'd like to get advice from. Maybe itâs a VIP or even a celebrity. You know they're important, so thereâs a high chance they might not read your message, right? Thatâs why your goal is to make it as effortless as possible for the busy person to find time to talk with you. You want to be concise and clear in your initial email, and make sure that the message resonates with them on an emotional level. Make sure that your words evoke a feeling, spark curiosity, or leave a lasting impression. After all, the ultimate success of your email depends on establishing a connection with the person you're reaching out to. So let me tell you my secrets for getting the attention of VIPs: 1) Respect their time Don't email someone on a Monday morning or their birthday unless you have something really important to say. Instead, think of when they're most likely to be receptive - like during lunch or Sunday night when they're prepping for the week. 2) Check your formatting Bad formatting can ruin even the best message. So make sure to use paragraph breaks and bullet points and keep it easy to read. And don't forget to send yourself a test email before you hit "Send." 3) Grammar & Spelling Nobody likes lazy typos. So pay attention to your punctuation and capitalization and proofread for any errors. Leave out the text abbreviations or lowercase "i"s. 4) Introduce yourself If you know someone who already knows your recipient, make sure to mention their name in the message for a more personal touch. 5) Make it specific Be as direct and transparent about why you're writing them. Don't beat around the bush - get straight to the point and be concise. 6) Offer choices When you make a request, give them more than one option. It shows respect for their time and they can pick the one that works best for them. 7) Show gratitude Remind your recipient of their worth - thank them for taking the time to read your message, and express your thanks for anything else they can do for you. Follow these simple tips, and you'll be able to craft emails that VIPs will actually respond to! Now let me show you an example of these principles in action. Let's say you're a college student (low status) looking to get in touch with the CEO of a business (high status). If you want to make sure your email gets the response it deserves, here's what it should look like: [Example of email]() Here are the big takeaways from this email: - Make sure you introduce your referral and affiliation right away.
- Keep the pitch brief but specific â this isn't about convincing them to work with you, it's about setting up a phone call.
- Be sure to specify a short time period â give them the option of a few choices, one all-day and two narrowly defined times. - Let them know you understand their status and politely offer to honor their schedule. - Finally, give them the choice of what they'd like to do â they might just call you as soon as they receive your email.
