To view this email as a web page, [click here]() {NAME}, Here's the TL;DR for today's email: 1) Yes, the doors to join my [Find Your Dream Job]() program close TONIGHT at midnight. [Countdown timer] 2) Yes, I think you should join. With the spreading layoffs and economic uncertainty right now, this is the time to recession-proof your career. Top performers are already taking action. Don't get left behind. 3) Yes, there are costs to doing nothing and settling for "good enough": - That horrific feeling of waking up, looking at your alarm, and starting off your day dreading the next 8 hours. UGH! - If youâre not challenged by your job, your skills are deteriorating every day. If youâre not being challenged by learning new skills or meeting people who are at the top of their game, youâre moving backward. - You spend more time at your job than with your family, your friends, and doing almost anything else. WHY would you settle for less than the best? In other words, do you look across the office at the guy 30 years older than you â the guy whoâs doing the exact same job as you right now â and dread the thought of doing the same job for the next thirty years? [Find Your Dream Job today]() The most important thing is this â If you want to earn more, land a dream job at an amazing company, or just live a Richer Life, you have to shift from being PASSIVE to being ACTIVE. Now, let's get tactical. How can you actually make that shift⦠Avoid these career mistakes Yes, there's plenty of positive advice out there about finding a job. But let's forget that. Today, I'd like to bring you down to the gates of hell. Let's talk about the negative stuff. All those MAJOR MISTAKES that will completely derail your job search. [GIF] And no, it's not picking the wrong resume font. I want to highlight three big mistakes that might surprise you. (These are major red flags we noticed in our research of hundreds of thousands of job seekers.) Mistake #1: Pointless soul searching How many people do you know that try to solve problems by sitting in their room and drawing Venn diagrams, making endless lists, and taking personality tests? "This is what I'm interested inâ¦and these are the jobs I know aboutâ¦so this must be the thing in the middle I gotta find. So what's my dream job?" The main code word to look out for here is "I'll figure it out." As in, "Yeahâ¦I really need to figure out what's going on. I should find a job. I really should figure that out." People who talk about "figuring it out" have usually been saying that for months. Often years. And they're not an inch closer to actually getting a dream job. What to do instead: Go outbound! Don't just sit in your room. If you think you might be interested in a company or industry or job title, go talk to people doing that now. Ask them all about it. This lets you test your assumptions and discover if you really DO or DON'T want that job. Going outbound is far more effective than sitting in your room and doing online research and thinking about it. And no, you don't have to "figure out" how to go outbound, either. Find Your Dream Job shows you exactly how to do this, step-by-step. Including word-for-word email scripts to make introductions and ready-to-use questions you can ask in meetings. [Just follow the proven system to find your dream job](). Mistake #2: Not getting specific When talking about their ideal job, a lot of people will say things like "Yeah, I definitely wanna work with a company that really helps people. I really wanna help people. I wanna add a lot of value." Okay, well, so does everyone else. That's like me saying, I wanna breathe oxygen. Super generic statements like that don't tell you anything. (Nor do they tell hiring managers anything.) What to do instead: Get specific! Like this: "I'd like to work as an inside sales rep at a B2C technology company in Silicon Valley that's building technology in the area of collaboration." Can you see the difference? All of a sudden there's only a short list of companies like that (and you can really drill down into them): - Which ones are good to their employees and which ones aren't?
- Which ones have money and which don't?
- Which ones are growing and which have stalled? You can start building relationships with real people in those companies. People who can give you the inside scoop on what it's like to work there and help you get a job. (Find Your Dream Job walks you through the process, step-by-step. With email scripts, research checklists, interview questions (and answers), sample resumes, and more. Everything you need is included. [More details here]().) Here's the ironic psychology of what's going on here. We have so many options these days. We don't want to close doors, so we refuse to get specific. We're afraid of making a mistake or missing an opportunity that we stay super broad and high-levelâ¦but this causes us to miss out on even more! Remember, just because you take one job or decide to explore one type of role doesn't mean you're stuck with that for the rest of your life. Once you learn the Dream Job System, you can apply it again and again. This is how top performers make disproportionate leaps in their career. Mistake #3: Updating your resume When anyone decides that they need to find a new job â maybe they got laid offâ¦maybe they're just sick and tired of their jobâ¦or maybe they just wanna move on â what's the first thing they do? "I'm gonna update my resume" We analyzed over 50,000 people and this phrase came up again and again. We heard it so often it became funny. It's also dangerous. This instinctive response falls prey to a horrible, horrible idea that your resume is simply a chronological listing of everything you've done. If that's your idea about resumes, you've already lost. This is how most people look at their resumes â the Average Applicants â but Top Performers understand that their resume is a narrative. You get about 7 seconds with a hiring manager⦠[GIF] If you give a hiring manager a chronological list of your work, they're not gonna remember anything. 10 seconds later, they'll have no idea who you were. Just another bunch of bullet points. What to do instead: Give them a narrative. A narrative lets you craft your resume to make an instant impression. For example, with my resume early on, I was the technology, psychology, and marketing guy. Everything in my resume â my work experience, my accomplishments, my education â all supported those three concepts. End result: Hiring managers saw that and said, "Whoa, this guy's pretty interesting. We should talk to him." (Btw, Find Your Dream Job teaches you exactly how to craft compelling resumes like this. And it includes an entire vault with real resumes, cover letters, and proposals that landed students 6-figure jobs. [My motto: Learn from the best of the best]().) [Included in Dream Job] What to do if you expect layoffs I'm not going to blow smoke up your ass. It's a tough economy out there. No matter how good you are, you or your company may be subject to layoffs. What should you do if you predict that there may be layoffs at your company? How you respond is a good example of the difference between being PASSIVE vs being ACTIVE in your career. Let's start with PASSIVE, the average performer's reaction⦠An average performer might somehow hear the news about layoffs. Probably not until the day they happen. What do they do? - Get frantic
- Worry about what they're going to do because they have no money saved up
- Hastily go update their resume That's it. Of course, when there are layoffs in one company, there are often layoffs across the entire industry â or even the whole economy. So now you have millions of other people in exactly the same situation, doing exactly the same thing. Not a good place to be. Now let's take a look at what ACTIVE top performers do⦠First, top performers don't take layoffs personally. They know that sometimes layoffs are inevitable, markets shift, and it's probably not due to any incompetence or negligence on their part. This is already a relief. Second, they don't panic. Top performers have planned ahead and built up an emergency savings net so that if there is a disruption in their income, they aren't forced to make poor decisions. (I had a number of friends who were laid off in 2008 and they called it "being fun-employed." Because they had savings, they weren't frantic and could use that time to rest, recharge and plan the next phase of their career. Other top performers who got laid off found a new, equitable job within two weeks.) Third, top performers keep doing more of the same: - They were networking while employedâ¦and they keep networking
- They had built strong relationships with their boss, their boss's boss, lateral people at their company â even people outside the company. And they keep nurturing those relationships Totally different approaches! If you suspect layoffs are coming to your company, which position would you rather be in? I had a friend who was laid off on a Friday. He was a top performer. He called another friend to share the news. This is literally what his friend said: "Oh, that sucks, man. Well, do you want a job?" Done. Hours later, he was employed again. That's the value of being a top performer and knowing how to use the [Dream Job System](). Don't despair if you don't have the savings or you don't have the network. That's what my Find Your Dream Job program will show you how to get. (Not to mention rapid promotions, extra perks and even bidding wars to hire you.) If layoffs happen, would you rather be an average performer â frantically updating your resume and competing against hundreds of thousands of other unemployed people for the same shortlist of ho-hum jobs? Or would you rather be a top performer who isn't shaken by short term waves and can step from one great opportunity to another?
