To view this email as a web page, [click here]() {NAME}, It's easy to claim that we want a dream job, but there's often a vast difference between what we say and what we do. Here's a quick test to highlight this: - In the last 6 months, have you done anything that is remarkable enough to be quantitatively measured and added to your resume? - In the next 6 months, can you reasonably expect a promotion or higher level of responsibility? And the kicker⦠- Knowing that past behavior is a relatively accurate predictor of future behavior, can you reasonably expect to get a Dream Job within 6-12 months? These are very challenging questions! We may claim we want a Dream Job, but our behavior often doesn't mirror that. For example, I was coaching a student named Caitlin. She genuinely wanted a Dream Job â or said she did â but every week when I would check on her progress, she hadn't followed through with my advice. Or even taken productive steps forward. Instead, she was wasting her time on a bunch of nonsensical, unproductive behaviors. Instead of changing her behavior, she just got increasingly frustrated â especially when I called out the disconnect between what she was saying and what she was doing. This happens to all of us! - We know we should go to the gym.
- We know we should floss.
- We know we should manage our moneyâ¦and yet we don't. And when this happens with something very important â like our careers, like finding a Dream Job that pays us what we're really worth â then we become increasingly confused and upset. We can feel like we're thrashing around but getting nowhere. Ahh! [gif] Thankfully, this doesn't have to be the end of the story. There's a simple (but counterintuitive) way to shift your whole approach. Behavior first, then attitude I talk a lot about top performers. Many people are surprised to learn that top performers feel the same fears and frustrations as everyone elseâ¦they just don't let it stop them. How do they do it? Take something you want: - Maybe that's becoming healthy and energetic
- Or finding a Dream Job
- Or X, Y, Z. This works for all goals Accept that changing your attitude is NOT the first step. We tend to believe that if we change our attitudeâ¦then our behavior will follow. But this is backwards! Focus on changing your behavior first. Then you'll find that your attitude follows. If you want to find a job you love, don't wait until you wake up perfectly motivated, free of worries and confident in yourself. Start taking action now, even if you're racked with nervousness. Your behavior will drive your attitude. And instead of being controlled by your past behavior, you'll be able to chart a new path for your career. I can tell you, having tested this with many, many people, that the results are dramatic. [Signature] P.S. Are you registered for my free class on how to recession-proof your career?
