Things aren't actually good. And they're certainly not great. But they're also not painful enough that you're motivated to take action and make a change. So you do nothing…just wait and complain. Most people spend their entire lives in this murky middle ground: - In their finances: "Hey, I pay my bills on time. Let me enjoy HBO Max and upgrade my phone every couple years. No, let's not talk about long-term saving." - In their health: "Everyone's tired in the morning, right? Everyone needs Advil and espresso to get through the day, right?" - In their personal lives: "I take a vacation every year. It's only a week, but sometimes I go someplace nice…" This "good enough" stagnation can seep into your career, too. Considering that you spend 40+ hours a week at your job, for decade after decade…that's a LONG TIME to be settling for "good enough." Today, I'm here to shake you by your collar and snap you out of it. [gif] Here are 13 signs that your job has plateaued. Consider this your wake up call: - You've got the Sunday Scaries, bad. It's hard to enjoy Sunday afternoons knowing you have to start another week at work the next day. - The last new thing you learned was… Who knows? It's been so long since your job challenged you to learn something new. (And just as long since you challenged yourself to learn something new.) - Your company has stopped growing. Even if you wanted to advance, you can't do it at your current job. - Your salary has stopped growing, too. In fact, with inflation, your earning power is starting to shrink. - You love “Severance.” No one else seems to understand the futility of the modern workplace. - You keep doing the same thing, over and over. For years. Your job feels like you're trapped in your own personal “Groundhog Day” loop. [gif] - No juice. The last thing you'd want to do in your free time is build your skills or tackle a juicy problem at work. - Feeling like a cog in the machine. When was the last time you received meaningful feedback and recognition from your manager? Is your boss interested in your career development…or just in your work output? - Burnout. Often, burnout isn't about how much work you do, but about how meaningful it is. - Loss of confidence in yourself. This one is really insidious. Settling for a "good enough" job can slowly erode your belief in what you can achieve. Instead of pushing your greatness, you start pushing for good enough. Do that long enough and you can start doubting that greatness is even a possibility. - Loss of opportunities to collaborate. So much growth comes from meeting and working with top performers in other roles, on other teams, even in other companies. Do you have time carved out each week to build these relationships and learn from them? Or do you avoid meetings and meet-ups at all costs and just hang out with your cats? - Do you give a shit? Sometimes, it's that simple. And finally… - Your role is prime for the chopping block. When the market swings down or your company hits a rocky patch, are you worried about your job security? If you feel ho-hum about your job and contribution, how do you think your boss feels? Or your boss's boss? In fact, how worried you are about job security is often directly correlated to how stagnant your career has become. Top performers who are learning, growing, advancing and always looking for ways to provide more value simply don't have the same worries about job security. If any of these signs resonated with you, TAKE ACTION! This is your opportunity to shift the trajectory of your career. Just because your job has stagnated today doesn't mean it needs to stay that way. [Signature] P.S. Want to jumpstart your career growth?
