There are some simple ways to find business ideas if you donât have any, or narrow down to a single idea if you have a ton of ideas. Go back and read Tuesdayâs email or go to [my blog]() for help. But Iâve learned that information usually isnât the barrier. What holds us back are our own beliefs about whatâs possible. Until you get rid of these [invisible scripts](), the âinformationâ goes in one ear and out the other. Today, I want to show you how to overcome three other common reasons people tell me they canât start a business. 1. âI donât know where to start!"Brutal truth: You donât simply need more information. If information alone mattered, almost nobody would be overweight, or unproductive, or in debt. The truth is, if you just lacked information, you would have found it already. You donât need to âfigure it outâ on your own. And even if you could, why would you want to? Why reinvent the wheel? How to rewrite this script: Find [a proven system]() and follow it. Trust the system. 2. âWhy would anyone buy from me?"Hereâs the fear: There's already a ton of information out there. Why would anyone choose you over all these other people? Some of them have had websites for years. They have way more traffic, more connections, more money. Why would someone choose you? How would they even find you? Or maybe the fear is âI'm not an expert. Other people have been doing this for 10+ years. A lot of them have professional certifications, books, and even TV appearances. Why would anyone listen to me? And if Iâm not sure about myself, how can I expect other people to take me seriously?â Imposter Syndrome is real, and it is crippling. So many of us waste our time chasing mythical credentials, waiting for the right day when we suddenly have a certificate from some random organization giving us permission to go out in the world and do what weâre here to do. And then what? Suddenly we find⦠uh oh, that degree didnât matter as much as we thought. Now what are we supposed to do? Hereâs the truth: When you speak directly to your readersâ burning needs, they stop wondering what your qualifications are and start asking how you can help. Nobody cares about your website early on or your perfect typefaces on your Instagram account. You donât need to do the same things as a multimillion-dollar business in your early days⦠you need to find three people who will happily pay you. This is LIBERATING! Embrace being small. Embrace mistakes. [Get started]() and move fast. 3. âI hate selling!âDo you want someone to apologize to you when you buy your favorite dish at your favorite restaurant? Or when you treat yourself to that item youâve been eyeing for months? NO! Youâre happy to pay. [Do you think the chef apologized for charging me for this? No! And I was happy to pay.] Do you think the chef apologized for charging me for this? No! And I was happy to pay. If you have a great product or service that solves a real problem, why would you apologize? Why discount it 50%? Being afraid to sell can actually hurt your sales and make people think less of your product. Sales doesnât have to be sleazy. You can build a business around your authentic self. And if youâre offering the right product to the right person, price is a triviality. Be bold. Youâre worth it. The strategy I use to overcome invisible scriptsI write down ALL my invisible scripts BEFORE I have to make a decision: - âIâm uncomfortable doing ___â
- âI donât have enough timeâ
- âI donât have enough moneyâ
- âWill this work for me?â
- âWhat if I fail?â And for 15 minutes, I just sit down and say, âWhat if I were perfect?â How would I answer these questions? How would I make the time? Do I really not have the money, or do I just use that as an excuse / could I make changes in my spending? If you honestly decide an opportunity is not right for you, great!
