Here’s what Find Your Dream Job student Abhinav Singh’s girlfriend (now wife) To view this email as a web page, [click here]() [IWT Header] {NAME}, Here’s what [Find Your Dream Job]() student Abhinav Singh’s girlfriend (now wife) Jenifer Sequeira asked him when they first started dating in 2016: “What do you have to show for yourself? You’ve been in the US for the past eight years. What the hell are you doing?” I love it! [Abhinav Singh] Abhinav recently emailed me his story. Here’s how it started: “I heard and subscribed to you when I was eagerly seeking financial advice back in 2017. I had $20,000 in credit card debt with a $50k annual salary in Indiana. I had accumulated and was struggling to pay that debt off since 2013.” In the years since then, Abhinav has made significant improvements: “I am confident, not just a talker but a doer, more organized in my approaches to get things done, and able to stay focused and excited (not just motivated) while doing something. “My confidence level has improved significantly by the number of good things I have been able to achieve. Here’s a brief list of some of the major achievements in the past couple of years. - Got my Dream job - No debt (excluding mortgage) - Have $40k+ (CDN) in my savings as an emergency fund - Have $55k+ in my RRSP in Canada (similar to a 401k) - Have $20k in my investment accounts like Robinhood and Wealthsimple - Bought a residential house in November 2019 for $700k in one of the best Toronto suburbs - Bought a condominium rental property in December 2020 for $450k - Bought another rental property a couple weeks ago for $850k “As of now, excluding mortgages (mostly self-paying and well under 1.5% interest), my wife and I have built a total wealth of approximately $550k in the last three years. “We have a total income of a little under $300k and believe that we are on the right path of building wealth and living our Rich Life.” Now, let’s look at how he did it. How it started: $20k in credit card debtAbhinav had finished his bachelor’s and master's degrees in 2012 on a full scholarship. Since he didn’t have to pay for school, he got used to spending money. He traveled, he bought cars, he partied. By the end of 2013, he had $20,000 in credit card debt. Years later, he still had the debt. That’s when he met his girlfriend. “When she asked me what I had to show, she wasn’t criticizing me or pushing me down. It was in a funny way, trying to pull me up,” Abhinav said. “But it hit me: She’s right.” He found my material, and over the next couple years paid off his debt, started investing, and automated his savings. “I don’t have ‘passion’ about anything”If there's one piece of career advice that drives me crazy, it's "follow your passion." [Follow Your Passion] COME ON GUYS!! Just follow your passion and you'll (magically) get your Dream Job, more money you can spend, tropical beach vacations, etc., etc. Passion is not enough, no matter how much American culture beats it into your head. I’m passionate about hot sauces and ironing. There is no Dream Job out there teaching people who think black pepper is spicy how to iron your shirts so crisply that the crease cuts your face. Also, if you had asked me in my 20s what my passion was, I would have said drinking tequila with friends on Taco Tuesday. Again, not going to get me a Dream Job. Same for Abhinav. “Bruce Willis is my favorite superstar,” he said. “I’m very passionate about Bruce Willis. I want to be Bruce Willis. But I can’t do that. It’s stupid.” [Bruce Willis] You can’t become Bruce Willis just because you have the “passion” to be Bruce Willis. (Photo credit: [Caroline Bonarde Ucci]()) “First, you have to take acting classes. You have to do certain hard work and then see if you can even become an actor at ANY level, forget about movies,” he said. “So with Find Your Dream Job, that’s the thought process that started coming to mind. It was a more concrete, down-to-earth thing.” Yes! In my own career, I took different jobs. Some of them I really liked. Others I thought I'd enjoy, but when I tried, I found out they weren't a good fit. Over time, all of these little observations and experiences added up into clarity on the things I was passionate about. THE BIG TAKEAWAY: Passion is the OUTPUT, not the INPUT. This is a totally different reframe from how most people think about passion. If you embrace it, you'll find that landing a Dream Job you're passionate about doesn't have to be luck or a pipedream. Career SeasonsAnd forget about a single passion. At different points in our lives, we want different kinds of jobs. There are three Career Seasons: - Growth: When we prioritize learning and earning more — and we’re willing to put in the time. - Lifestyle: When we want to prioritize our time outside work, such as taking care of family. - Reinvention: When we want to completely reinvent ourselves, including the role and even industry we work in. [Career Seasons]() Abhinav determined that he was in a growth season. “So every time I would talk to a recruiter, my first question would be ‘What’s the growth possibility?’” “That Briefcase Technique is amazing”Now that he knew his Career Season, he could narrow down the types of jobs he was looking for. But then came the interviews. “I used to get very nervous,” he said. “I was terrible with interviews. Even if I knew what I was talking about, I would hesitate and I wouldn’t be able to pull off confidence in my answers and I would sound unprepared. And actually I was unprepared.” He thought that since he had been working in the field, a company should hire him based on that experience. “But with Find Your Dream Job, it doesn’t matter if you’re an engineer or a mechanic or a plumber or working as a McDonald’s manager or whatever — it works for everyone,” he said. “It’s about preparation. And when you’re prepared for an interview, your attitude is that there is nobody better out there that you can hire.” “I prepared for two months”Before going through [Find Your Dream Job](), Abhinav was slacking in his preparations. After? “I prepared for an interview for two months. In fact, I hired a trainer to train me with the technology and to take the interview,” he said. “That was the main weapon.” It paid off … big time. “With interviewers, I would tell them that I’m in the market today. They usually wanted to schedule a call in a week or in a month because the data architects and senior managers are ‘too busy.’ But I told them, ‘I’m in the market today. I cannot promise you that I’ll be in the market tomorrow. I have lots of interviews in the pipeline. There are second rounds, third rounds of interviews. Some are today, some are tomorrow. If you’re interested, let’s get a call scheduled.’” I love it! Normally, people in his field can’t get a single interview within two weeks. Abhinav got ten interviews with six different companies — and had had multiple job offers within two weeks of starting his job search. “You asked me and I gave you a number”A major part of a Dream Job is a fair salary. You’re your own worst enemy when it comes to salary negotiations. Once you get past your mental barriers, you’ll be ready to tackle negotiations. That’s how Abhinav approached it. Before going through [Find Your Dream Job](), Abhinav was like most people. When the recruiter would ask what his salary expectations were, he’d hem and haw and hesitate because he hadn’t done market research. “Because of Dream Job, there was no hesitation,” he said. “There was a clear-cut number — there was no range. I’d say ‘I’m looking for $145,000.’ They’d come back and ask ‘How about 137.’ My answer to that was, ‘You asked me and I gave you a number. I told you it’s 145. If it was 137, I would have told you 137.’” That’s how you do it! A 73% raise After the job search and negotiation, Abhinav got a 73% raise — from CDN $82,000 to $142,000. “One thing that I love about my Rich Life now is that my wife doesn’t bug me as much about me making so little money.” Lol. [Abhinav and family] Abhinav’s Rich Life also includes lots of travel with his family Buy all the coffee pods you wantThanks to his new job and salary, Abhinav also doesn’t have to worry about $3 questions and can focus on $30,000 questions. An example: Nespresso coffee pods. “My friend gifted me a Nespresso machine and I was like, ‘Who’s going to buy pods for these?'” But thanks to his increased income, Abhinav doesn't have to worry. Part of his Rich Life now is not worrying about purchases under $30. I love it. From $20k in debt to a $550k net worth in 4 years. Congratulations, Abhinav! [Signature] P.S.
