When was the last time you started off your day with a lie? To view this email as a web page, [click here]() Guilt-free productivity When was the last time you started off your day with a lie? - "I'm going to wake up early tomorrow." - "Ugh, I'm still tired…I'll exercise after work instead" (hits snooze button) - "I'm going to be really focused today" (said while grabbing your phone and opening TikTok while still in bed) Calling these "lies" sounds pretty harsh. Maybe they're good intentions. Either way, we tell ourselves these kinds of things all the time — and regularly feel guilty about it. This is just like feeling guilty about buying your daily latte ("if you invest that money, you'll be able to afford a house in 253 years") or giving up on your budget. And just like with money, there's actually an easier, guilt-free way to approach productivity. Step one is taking an honesty bath. [honesty bath] No, not that kind of bath. An honesty bath starts with getting BRUTALLY HONEST about yourself. This means you look back at the last month and say, “What did I claim I was going to do? And what did I really do?” And then, you classify everything into three buckets: - DELETE — Not important. Not going to happen. So stop doing it, trying to do it and certainly stop feeling bad about it. This worry is off your plate! - DEFER — Not important at the moment. So backburner it and stop worrying about it. You have a guilt-free pass to ignore it for now. - DO IT — This is what you should focus on (which is now easier because you've just freed up so much time and energy from everything you deleted and deferred). Example: If I claim I’m going to wake up every day at 7am to go running, but every morning, I just slap the snooze button until it’s 8am … I’m not going to go running before work! DELETE! If I claim I’m going to make my bed every morning, but I have a huge project at work and I haven’t made it in the last 3 weeks, I’m not going to make my bed while the crazy project is happening at work. DEFER! If I claim I'm going to do a better job of planning meals and eating healthier — and this is really important to me — I'm going to sign up for a meal prep service and give it a shot. DO IT! It doesn't have to be perfect. I can always adjust it later. Most productivity advice is focused on what you "should" be doing. Not what you really want to do. Or what you can do today, with everything else in your life. The result is that most productivity advice makes us feel bad. We feel guilty that we're not more productive. An honesty bath works because your past behavior is the best predictor of future behavior. If you find yourself using the word “just” — “Ugh, I’ll just start next week” or “I’ll just try harder this week” — you’ve already lost. The best part? Once you make the decision, you can live GUILT-FREE and use your energy to commit to things you’ll actually do. How to follow through without “trying harder” Most productivity advice fails because it's some variation of: - "Try harder" - "It'll be easy with this app / journal / supplement" The truth is that real productivity starts at a much, much deeper level — your inner psychology. I go into this in-depth in my Finisher's Formula program, particularly in this lesson: [Finisher's Formula]() Just in this lesson alone, I cover: - How to stop beating yourself up and how to eliminate destructive self-talk. - Why getting things done is a skill — and how to systematically master it. - Why "just doing it" is a bad idea. - And how top performers get amazing results with a completely different approach (the "Finisher's Formula"). The full program includes a lot more, including a workshop on creating habits that stick, another workshop on mastery, field reports, and a bonus Q&A. [Full details are here](). My advice to you: Honesty bath it. Right here, right now. Are you struggling with low productivity, negative self-talk or trouble living up to your potential? - If not, or if this isn't important to you — DELETE IT and move on, guilt-free. - If you do want help in this area but just can't deal with this right now — DEFER IT. (Note that Finisher's Formula comes with lifetime access so you could join now and download the lessons to have them on-hand when you're ready, perhaps when you're commuting or at the gym. Many of my best students use this strategy. I use it as well.) - If you do want to improve your productivity — DO IT! [Join now](). The program comes with a 60-day, money-back guarantee so there is no pressure. You can take your time, try it for yourself and THEN decide if you want to keep it. 100% risk-free.)
