A while back, my wife and I took a Gottman relationship seminar. Based on To view this email as a web page, [click here]() {NAME}, A while back, my wife and I took a Gottman relationship seminar. Based on Gottman’s research, he can actually predict, with fairly good accuracy, whether or not a couple will stay together or get divorced. Cass and I are early in our marriage. We like to spend time being proactive about our relationship, just like you might be proactive about fitness or travel. This seminar was on a weekend. Saturday and Sunday. About 8 hours each day. And it was exhausting. But looking back, it was an awesome use of time. We both really enjoyed it. Beyond learning new tools for communicating, just setting the time aside and making our relationship a priority brought us closer together. One of the things I really loved about his material was when he pointed out that couples who disagree about core topics — parenting, money, travel, whatever — are probably always going to disagree. When I heard that, I thought aaaaaaahhhh. It felt so permissive, so freeing. But what you CAN do is learn how to discuss the things you disagree on. How to negotiate and accept the differences. Cass and I went through a number of exercises that were really helpful, especially proactively. Many of the lessons we learned also apply to building a great career. I'll share some of my favorites... First, how do you spend your time? If something is important to you, like your relationship, look at your calendar and your spending. Are you prioritizing it? If you want to find a Dream Job, are you putting time and resources into it? Second, who are you learning from? Part of the reason I'm sharing this story is to show you I walk the walk. I'm not just sitting out here creating programs for other people. I'm always investing in myself, always learning. I take programs with my wife. I do them on my own. Courses, seminars, all kinds of mentorship. I think that's important for the people you trust. And I appreciate you following me. Third, avoid perfectionism and focus on action. Was this the PERFECT seminar? No! There is no such thing. There's no perfect seminar, perfect book, perfect teacher. The best thing I can do is be the best student. If I had skipped it because one or two bits didn't directly apply to me, I would have missed out on so much. I was ready. I knew I could adapt and adopt the material to my individual situation. And I didn’t nitpick my way out of action. That’s how you grow. If you want a Dream Job, don’t look for all the reasons this WON’T work for you. Look for the reasons it WILL. It’s already worked for thousands of people — why not you, {NAME}? Let me share a story about how this worked for one of my Find Your Dream Job students. Ashley Torres had been at the same job for 8 years and was in the reinvention phase of her career. She knew any new job would have to be meaningful to her. When Ashley saw a job posting on Instagram, she knew it was the one for her. But a celebrity activist with more than four million Instagram followers and a civil rights activist with over 45k followers had already shared the job, so she knew she’d face intense competition. Another problem: The job listing required a cover letter that would be graded as a writing piece, and Ashley usually ignored job postings that required cover letters because she didn’t know how to write one. So Ashley did a crash course on that part of Find Your Dream Job and gained the confidence and skills to apply. Her letter got her a first interview! Ashley says this about the interview process: “The process consisted of a screening call, and three follow-up interviews. And I felt in absolute control for every single one of them. Every call overall, just felt like a normal conversation with no pressure after using your interviewing suggestions.” I love it! Next: salary negotiations. The job was in the nonprofit sector, so Ashley anticipated a salary reduction from what she was currently making. “I still managed to negotiate a 5K salary increase and a 4-day work week!” Ashley said. “All remote with some occasional travel. Combined with their amazing benefits, I am more than satisfied with my decision. This new adventure I am taking is going to change my life.” Congratulations, Ashley!
