Travel involves really long days with totally unexpected things happening. You To view this email as a web page, [click here]() 3 things I do every time I travel Travel involves really long days with totally unexpected things happening. You have to stay on point. I travel a LOT, and I’ve learned several secrets about travel along the way. I thought I’d share some of them with you today. And stay tuned to the end — I’ll share the system that I’ve put together after years of studying how the most successful people stay focused and motivated, no matter what they’re doing. First, I want to share 3 important habits I try to do every time I travel. I eat the same meals as much as possible. Always a protein shake and almond snacks. For lunch, it’s chicken and rice everywhere. Doesn’t matter the restaurant — they almost all have it. I don’t really drink — maybe every once in a while. So if I decide to go out for dinner with a friend, it’s OK if I grab a pizza. I know that the rest of the day I ate nutritiously. I try to sleep and exercise consistently. When I come back from my trips, it’s 24 or 36 hours of collapsing and doing nothing. And I accept that happily. I never feel guilty, because my body needs it. I watch TV for the next day and a half. The next day, I feel pretty good, and I’m ready to go back at it. [Ramit] My 3-part travel protocol Other big parts of my travel routines are my travel checklists, gear, and experiments. ChecklistsI have a checklist that includes things like: - Get a haircut three days before I leave - Have certain foods sent to the hotel before I arrive - Always get the same flight times and seats When I first shared this list, people thought I was crazy. I standardize things as much as possible, because I don’t want to leave these things up to chance. I want the journey to be smooth, and that happens with preplanning. I always have the same flight when I go to New York. The exact time, the exact seat. If I can’t get that first seat choice, I have a second choice. It’s always the same. I don’t have to think about it. Minimize the number of choices you have to make so that you can focus on the important decisions when traveling. GearAs I developed this over the years, I started to understand why celebrities have riders with things like only green M&Ms and a bowl of grapes or other ridiculously specific things like that. Here’s why: When you’re traveling, so much is out of your control that you just want to have something that is in your control. So, I take my own shampoo and my own soap. I want to know that my skin is not going to feel filmy and I’m going to have the right shampoo with me. I have travel-sized bottles of everything. Every time I come home, I leave my bag out. Before I put it away, I check to make sure everything is filled up. If I’m out of something, I reorder it right away so that my travel bag is always ready to go and I don’t have to worry about it for the next trip. Also, everything goes back into the same exact spot. Travel can get out of control, so I want to know that my hair gel is always at the bottom of the second pocket from the right. Always. Some of you have asked, so I want to share some of my favorite travel gear. - [Here’s the brand of luggage I use]() - I have a 10-year-old version of [this toiletry kit]() - [This umbrella]() never breaks The theme with my travel gear (as with most of my purchases) is functional for most things and luxury for a few. I want to buy the best and keep it for life. My suitcases, toiletry kit, etc. will all last me 15–20 years. My weekender Loro Piana bag is luxury. Yes, it’s extremely light, but I don’t kid myself that I bought it because of its function (if I wanted something light, I could have gotten something from REI). I love the way it feels and I love the craftsmanship. ExperimentsWhen you land at LAX, you have to walk or get onto a bus to go to a lot where Uber and Lyft can pick you up. Wha… Great, I get to sweat again and lug all these bags around. One time when Cass and I were coming back, we said, “Let’s try a car service.” It’s double the price — $100 instead of $50. I wouldn’t have done that in the past, but part of our Rich Life is “Let’s try it once and see what we think.” Our first driver wasn’t particularly good. But the experience was really good. He came to the curb and he picked up our bags for us. In theory, it was awesome. We decided to do it again but find a different driver. We use LAX about 5–6 times per year, so we’re spending maybe $300 per year. We ended up loving it so much that we added it to our [Conscious Spending Plan](). Another principle we have is that if you do something infrequently, but there’s a way to make it magical, do it! New rule: Any time we land at the airport together, we use the car service. The secret of staying motivated and consistent while traveling I’ve learned that I need to stay focused and consistent when I travel. So I started studying what ACTUALLY makes people successful at doing this in other areas.
